I'm sure everyone is excited about this one folks? Chances of this being first up on MOTD?
We need a win really..Our season hasn't gotten started yet. That's easier said than done when Pulis is involved, and when our defence has conceded numerous headed goals already this season.
I guess Jack Wilshere will be a talking point, he started last weekend in a testimonial game and by all accounts looked decent, but then no challenges were really going in so of course he was going to look good spraying passes around. Likely to be very different against West Brom on Saturday.
Otherwise, Josh King got injured playing for Norway this week so it'd seem likely he won't start. Which is a shame considering he looks about our most dangerous forward currently. That might open the door for Lys Mousset to get on at some point, and he caused AC Milan all sorts of problems in that same testimonial. But again, only a proper game will be a proper test.
Yup, definitely a last on Match of the Day one this. We'll dominate the ball and lose to a set piece, predictably scored by Gareth MacAuley or Rondon.
The first half against Palace was the best we've played for a long, long time; possibly since Newcastle away all the way back in March. The second half we really struggled and didn't compete physically. We rightfully didn't win that one; but the pace and and intricacy of our first half gives us a bit of hope, and it's exactly how we'll need to break down a functional Pulis team.
Shame that King will be missing; by far our strongest attacking threat. Personally I'd like to see Gradel brought in and go to a 4-3-3 with two wide men behind a striker. Not sure that striker deserves to be Wilson right now either.
Play like we can and we could win, play like we have and we'll lose 1-0.
We needed that. Should do us, and Callum Wilson, the world of good.
Brilliant first half in terms of territory and possession, but little in the way of cutting edge. Looked every bit like one of those days. Again. Thankfully West Brom missed arguably the best chance of the half right at the death. They could easily have taken a totally against the run of play lead into half time. Berahino missing.
Second half was far more open, West Brom opened up and started playing some actual football. Which was a welcome addition to the game. Both sides with openings, end to end stuff at times!
Boruc did his best to gift goals away with his kicking, but we always scrambled clear, break up the other end, screw a decent opening up and send West Brom flying forward again.
Deadlock broken on 80 mins with one lone moment of quality in the box all game. Callum Wilson of course. Lively flick, 1-0.
Maxi Gradel spent the rest of the game taking the piss down the left flank with his keep ball. Textbook stuff. Helped by Wilshere's introduction, no matter how tight west brom got to him he always had time to find a red shirt and keep possession. Together those two nullified any pressing west brom tried in efforts to win the ball back.
And that was that. The away end emptied with plenty of murmurings of Pulis out and suchlike, and walking back speaking to a few they are not a happy camp at all. The folks I spoke with would like Pulis out asap. That'd be a gamble you'd think? But it wasn't pretty, I can understand it.
Excellent stuff for the most part; we rode our luck a few times but you need that in poor form.
The subs changed the game; Wilshere added a creative spark and Gradel was skillful and direct. It actually allowed us to stretch the pitch which gave Smith the space for the assist to Wilson. Superb tactical tweak from Eddie to theoretically stretch the pitch a bit more. The way Wilson celebrated you could see the relief; was a hell of a finish too considering he would have taken any goal to get him going again; even off his arse!
The football from West Brom was cynical, boring, unadventurous, and at times bizarre. Ben Foster getting a warning for time wasting in the first half summed up their approach. They probably would have got something had they put our defence under pressure.
