I started going to the Alex a year or two after we signed Steve Macauley. He's a proper Alex legend. Phil Clarkson was the other player we signed from Fleetwood in those days - he was a good player but broke his leg horribly in a match with Torquay and never quite established himself as a first team regular. He went on to have a good career with Scunthorpe and Blackpool though. In fact, I think he might be in Blackpool's Hall of Fame...

My first season watching us was Macca's last season in the early 2000s. Went his testimonial as well. Believe in the late 80s and early 90s we signed a lot of Northern Premier League lads like Tony Naylor, Shaun Smith (who also got a testimonial with Macca) and we had another lad from you lot I believe. But slightly before my time.

Can only imagine Barton will get offered a new contract. He's done a terrific job. But could the implementation of a salary cap for this level possibly hinder that? Even though it's been introduced, the rules have been kind to players on existing contracts before it was introduced. So I think a lot of clubs at the top end of this division are facing shit or bust and those that fail to go up will lose players next Summer unless they accept a pay cut. And I can't see many players being willing to take a cut in pay either.
Good point your making about salary caps, Ched Evans was on big money so the cynic in me says Fleetwood decision to get rid of him 'early' sounds like a pre emptive strike.
TrinidadNumber one, yeah Phil Clarkson was a good player for us, I remember a game in the 80's at Highbury and he scored a vital goal in a big cup match. Good to hear he was so well though of at your club, and of course Crewe's success in the transfer market was their skill at picking lower league players and turning them into very good footballers

Funny you say that, I think the time Fleetwood appeared on my radar aside from Macca was Jamie Vardy. We had him on trial (a couple of times?) before he went to Halifax (then yourselves) but it was all around the time of Gudjon Thordarson when the club was having a collective mental breakdown. So we stuck with Byron Moore instead.
