I've just seen the Southampton goal on match of the day and am surprised at the criticism of the referee in the "part" he played in events.

Bobby Madley seemed to me to be standing exactly where he should have been if he was working the refereeing diagonal which ensures him being in the best position to view play. It's not his fault if a Burnley player runs into him.

Why should Southampton be disadvantaged because a Burnley player runs into the referee..?

As I understand things, the referee is considered to be a part of the field of play and as such, any inadvertent effect on play does not result in a stoppage, for instance, if the ball hits him and is deflected into the goal, the goal would stand.

So, can anybody on this site tell me why Burnley should have any grounds for complaint in this situation..? If so, what specific law covers this?

He just stood his ground it seems which is fair enough.

The incident was on half way so Southampton still had a bit of work to get the ball into the net as well...

Surprised the Burnley player didn't fall to the floor actually claiming a foul/injury!
