What would you say his best position is? I'm not quite sure what position we've signed him for. At a guess, I'd say possibly to play in a 3 man centre midfield but we have such a bloated squad it's hard to tell yet.

I like him as an attacking CM, where he'll support the strikers but will do all the work off the ball you need him to. But he's effective anywhere really. Hampton & Richmond played him as a striker in one of their last games before null and void and he looked like he'd played there all his life, even though we hardly ever used him there.

Paddy Madden signs for the Hatters

Statement of intent. Mind you, not sacking a successful promotion-winning manager would've been a better sign of intent

Good signing and great deal for Paddy Madden himself. No doubt the highest paid player in the league now and on a lovely 3 year deal at 31 which I’m sure was a big factor in his move.

Remember seeing him face up against us plenty of times over the years... always a nuisance and always good for a goal so I’m sure he’ll do well, especially at this level.

Obviously it’s logically a great signing, but nothing Stockport are doing really looks like a club with much of a plan. It’s like they’ve decided that Rusk can’t be allowed to fail.

I think that's accurate.

We have all the gear but struggling for the idea. We've got good backing, we've set up with D.O.F, appointed scouts up and down the country etc. No stone has been left unturned but there's something missing.

Obviously the something missing to the supporters is Jim Gannon but there's something not quite hitting the spot in terms of how it's being planned out.

If we can keep our heads above the play-off line though, I'd fancy us as much as anyone for what is a mini knockout tournament. We've got some good players but we need to get a consistent team knowing their roles so we could hit the end of the season well into a potential play off etc.

It’s very Salford-esque but this league with its line of former league clubs and one promotion place almost forces the issue. While 31 and obviously here for his last big contract everything I’ve read about Madden suggests he’ll work his bollocks off and not rest on his laurels.

I hope if/when we get to the league that our transfer policy moves to picking up the best players from this league and the one above who are in their early twenties and have room to grow with us.

Wowzers, three-year deal for a highly paid 31-year-old during the most uncertain period in living memory, and a ‘substantial’ fee. Stockport definitely Going For It (I mean, they were already, but y’know).

I wonder if Adam Rooney has a clause in his contract that states he must be the highest paid player in the league....

Good job he isnt further down the M5 or Chesterfield would be calling

This is a ridiculous signing for a National League club. 3 years deal with substantial fee is expected to get the players in who are going to do the business (ala John Rooney).

We've seemingly tightened our defence up and have taken more control of matches since Rusk came in but that has been to the detriment of the 'goals for' column but according our our master statistician DOF we are still creating more chances than most teams in the league, so a fox in the box goal scorer seems to be exactly what we need to start winning games comfortably.

I guess we'll find out in the coming weeks.

Stockport stopping at nothing then, a relentless and remorseless pursuit of promotion.

Not sure Reynolds has enough money to compete with this lot.

Bet the current strikers will be up for the fight, not. Signings like this are good but cause serious issue with the ones that were already there doing a good job. He’s no better or worse than solihull Rooney and he struggles.

Don't think our strikers were doing much of a good job to be honest, it's been an area of struggle all season. Alex Reid has been alright but he tends to play wide under Rusk and we've been chasing goals with short term loan signings. Richie Bennett is our only real permanant player who is a number 9 striker and he doesn't fit the style under Rusk at all. Going off this Madden's pedigree, when gets up to speed he should walk in the team as our number 9 to be honest.

Bennett's your archetypal target man, to hold the ball up and let others press the line forward, he did his job perfectly well and that's what Reid kept benefitting from. Goalscoring was never a problem, we only failed to score four times under Gannon, compared to six times out of nine for the two Simons. That's not down to our forwards failing to put away the chances they get, they've barely been getting any chances in the first place because the whole team has been sailing rudderless.

Had no idea Stockport were chucking so much cash at it this season, it’s not gonna be much fun for us next season trying to compete with Stockport and Wrexham if neither of them manage to go up this season.
I’d started to slowly come round to the idea of another stint in this league with a a bit of hope but that’s starting to evaporate now.

Nyal Bell has joined Altrincham on loan for the rest of the season.

Good luck Nyal. Should get a few goals for Alty in their pursuit of the play offs.

Excited for a summer of Notts, Stockport and Wrexham arguing about whose new big money signing is going to be the best, only for the league to be won by some well-run, quasi-part time club from somewhere in London.

A bit confused about this one. A few weeks back we were running on 1/2 fit strikers and desperately needed him back. Wild has made it clear for several weeks though we basically can’t afford any signings and hinted we only got Chadwick back as Hull are paying his wages.

We’ve 4 solid options fit options in Hyde, Chadwick, Allen and Campbell so not the end of the world but looking back I suspect you recalled him purely to weaken us since he’s never featured for you once since returning.

Hope he does well at Alty but not at our expense. Suspect we will be in for him permanently in the summer.

When we recalled him we only had two other strikers. New manager came in and didn’t give him a chance and added three forwards so now he’s available.

I shouldn’t really be saying this as a fylde fan but if any 2 teams deserve money and hope it’s gotta be Stockport and Wrexham. Massive fan bases have put it with shit for years. I moan a bit about us getting relegated but in all honestly we’ve known nothing but success. We’ve been spoiled

Stones sign winger Ryan Gondoh. Ex Barnet, Colchester and Halifax. Most recently at Whyteleafe and Hampton. Assuming this is someone willing to play for free to bolster our depleted squad.

In one respect, surprising to see Madden drop down here but when someone offers you a 3.5-year deal at 31 years old on presumably similar Fleetwood wages then you're going to take it. And a six-figure fee as well, crikey.

Are Stockport at the Salford/Crawley/Fleetwood etc level of spending yet?

Not really. We still have a strong core of players that were originally part time and got us up from the Conference North.

This club has had years of no investment at all despite high average gates in the North and in order to get it moving, it needed a shot in the arm. I'm personally not sure some of our signings are wise investments but the feeling is we need the here and now to get out of this league and then we can start building things more long term and steady in the Football league. Most of the investment so far has been on the ground and on securing a top quality training ground. The club know this is probably the hardest league to get out of and have said as much.

The cynic in me thinks that the big money Madden signing was probably a way Stott thinks he cantake some heat off the saga that was sacking Gannon for Rusk, Stott/Wilson are no mugs to realise that the atmosphere at the club will be very sour if this season falls flat on its arse because of a managerial change. Also helps if Madden contributes to us going up this season!

I'll never agree with the Gannon sacking and I wish Stott had decided to go down the strong football CEO route and allow Gannon to have control over the football side rather than Wilson running the show, but it's happened now and I just want the club to enjoy a bit of success. God knows we've 'earnt' it.

I liked him when I saw him play for our second string a few years back, quick and direct.
