Wowsers. I thought Chesterfield were going to claim the day’s Official Going For It award but Pool$ have just pipped them at the bell.

Rowe is obviously a good player at this level but regardless of that, i don't think we should be offering out 3 year deals, however "desperate" we are!

Jack Lester aside, contracts of that length usually end in tears.

A 3 year deal for a 32yo! Didn’t someone else say it was going to be a loan?

Fuck me.

The guy literally just stands around for 90 mins 30-40 yards from goal, receives the ball and then shoots. He doesn’t move apart from striking the ball, which he can do very well admittedly. 3 year deal is mentalist gear.

Wait, I thought that was the kid Stockport signed? Surely you’ve not given Rowe one!?!

This was what he was like when I saw him at Fylde. Constantly drops very deep into almost a deep lying midfield role, which I doubt his manager wanted him to. Always seemed like a luxury player to me, I'm sure being the centre of attention worked great for him at Fylde but doesn't seem to have gone too well for him elsewhere.

Not going to defend it, it's an odd one.

I'm sure we wouldn't have done it if it weren't for the injury to Asante but yeah.....

We signed some lads around Rowe’s age on two year deals at the start of last season and it’s really cost us this year as they’re looking way past their best now. Three years is... bold.

Luxury player? He’s the best player we’ve ever had. It was a luxury for the other players to play with him. He carried us on his own at times. We’d be winning games, put him in centre mid and he was still the best player on the pitch. He isn’t mobile as others have said and he doesn’t put a shift in but he doesn’t need to. He’s that good of a footballer he doesn’t need to run around like a headless chicken. You get these other players that get a massive transfer fee like Rooney when Salford signed him and Rooney a strike partner that come from the football league and neither were fit to lace rowe’s boots. He will 100% be in the top 3 scorers next season. Chesterfield will soon see what he’s like

I thought we’d learnt our lesson on this. We still have some of our legacy FL players on 3/4 year deals on the books in Evans, Weston and Rowley and they are impossible to shift. Thankfully they’ve all reduced terms to stay or will be released but it’s a big gamble to give him a 3 year deal in my opinion. We’ve played it relatively safe under the trust with a lot of short term deals but this feels like the first punt they’ve taken, hopefully not out of desperation due to our form and Asantes injury

Does anyone else get the impression that things could go massively tits up for Stockport if they don't go up this season? Taking an almighty gamble with this wage structure unless their backer is richer than I thought.

He’s loaded thankfully - the budget has actually been cut slightly due to the pandemic.

Sorry but the biggest signing of the day is our loan of smoggie keeper Brad James. He once played for Aldershot.

It seems the Asante injury has thrown us into panic mode, as a paying a fee and offering a 3 year deal to a 32 year old suggests. But at the end of the day, if this lad fires us back to league football I won’t worry about it too much!!

We do now have a ridiculous front line for this level when everyone’s fit aswell... with Asante, Rowe, Denton, Mitchell, even Tyson to an extent, so next season if we don’t go up this year we will be expected to be right in the mix with that and JR will actually probably be under a bit of pressure to succeed with firepower like that. At the moment he’s still got a bit of a free hit at it this season given where he’s taken us from and how he’s transformed the whole feel around the club.

Have to say this signing does all seem a bit contradicting though given JR has been banging the drum about how we’ve slashed the budget by 20%... this signing alone will probs add that 20% right back on:lol:

Weston has been one of our best players since Rowe came in so I don’t think there is any desire from the club to ‘shift’ him. As you say, his renewed terms were reduced significantly so that was a win win really.

Next year though, players such as Boden, Jonathon Smith, Evans, Yarney, Tyson, Buchanan all leaving (they’re the definites but I expect there to be a number of others) will save us some big £ with the wages they’ll all be on.

I don’t really get why you’re in panic mode. You were in danger of going down when Rowe was appointed, just making the play-offs would be a ridiculous achievement and a bonus, surely? Even if you carried on your momentum and finished third or something, it just takes one bad decision or opposition wondergoal or something.

Just seems weird not to crack on with a squad that’s been doing so well (albeit with Asante out) and reassess in the summer when the pool of players available will be so much bigger and you’ve got some time to think.

I don’t understand it either really. We’ve had a couple of defeats on the bounce, but before that we’d won 5 in a row (all be it with Asante), so we’re not even in that poor of form really.

We’ve also got 4 fit strikers available in Tyson, Dinanga, Yussuf and Mitchell so it’s surprising the board have actually sanctioned the deal, especially given Rowe signed 3 of those!! All I can say is I hope it’s all been thought through properly and that we are continuing to spend within our means

Its an odd one. On one hand he's an excellent player on his day, and should be able to step into the Asante gap immediately. On the other its a 3 year deal for a 32 year old who had a year left on his contract and who cost Bradford 50k in January.

If he gets you up happy days though I guess! Also the last player I really raised my eyebrows over when he was given a 3 year deal was Scott Quigley, so what do I know?

When the Trust took over I saw a report that had your wages as 2.4m, I'm not sure if this was all staff costs not just playing staff though. 20% cut from that would be 1.9m, which is still quite a hefty wage bill for this league.
