Very strange news coming out the club this morning, as keeper Grant Smith has left the club by mutual consent

He was given a new contract until the end of next season about 2 months ago before suddenly being dropped from the team out of nowhere and replaced by Montgomery

Something has definitely gone off behind the scenes there, will be interesting to find out what happened. Having said that, he looked brilliant for us and so any team at this level looking for a goalkeeper should have him on their radar IMO. Small keeper but commands his box very well.

Guessing your links to Ryan Boot may be on the mark after all. Loach and Boot would be two cracking goalkeeping options should it come to fruition.

On paper and in an ideal world it looks brilliant, however I really don’t like the idea of rotating goalkeepers during the season and if we had two goalkeepers of Boot and Loach’s quality I’ve no doubt that that would happen

I prefer the idea of just having one recognised number 1, with a young up and coming understudy that wants to learn and push the number 1 all the way

That would make sense, maybe Smith feels he should be number 1 on merit, and bringing in Loach (and potentially other keepers) has put his nose out of joint. Rotating keepers isn't for everyone.

Loach is a top keeper at this level and I'm sure you'll bring in a decent number 2.

He needs to be back playing games regularly again. I bet he's played far less games over the last 4 years or so than he did in his final season at Boreham Wood.

I suspect that's what it's about. He knows he needs to be 100%#1 keeper, the upset seemed to start when Montgomery was brought in and started getting a bit of game time when Smith hadn't really done much wrong, other than 1 howler I remember which he redeemed in the same game making some fine stops.. It's hard to imagine he's fallen out with James Rowe, such a affable character loved by everyone, friend and foe alike. Looks like he's asked to leave

Dobbie scored a million goals in Scotland playing at a level somewhere equivalent to about 13 divisions lower from even the Conny North.

Jack Earing has just signed for Walsall, I see
Little bit concerned about next season at this point. Good luck to the lad but 2 of our best players have moved on.

Recruitment has to be spot on or we might be fighting at the other end of the table next season..

Big blow for us. Losing Earing and King over the last few days. Could be a long season at this rate…

I'm pretty sure B2TF said that when you lost the Conference's best ever player Cameron King last year. Apparently Callum Roberts had posters of him on his bedroom wall. You didn't do too badly after that.

I was worried losing Cam King last season but Earing turned out to be even better than King. Don’t think we’ll go down by any means but unless we replace those 2 and add some extra quality on top we won’t be challenging for playoffs imo.

19/20 we had Cam King who was very good and decided to leave at the end of the season for Kings Lynn as they were local for him. We also had Jeff King who was only really a bit-part player and no one would have been too fussed had he been released

This season, Jeff King ended up being our RWB as we lost Duckworth to York. Once again, because it was his local club. This turned out to be a revelation as he ended up being voted our player of the season. It's been announced he's leaving and it sounds like he's set to sign for Chesterfield.

We’ve signed former Wealdstone and Bromley winger Charlie Wakefield.

Charlie Wakefield is one of our old academy lads. Think he was well thought of at one point, he was given a few chances but never really did anything. He was in some poor sides though

Edit: I've just realised this is a completely different Charlie Wakefield. Embarrassing

Aren't Halifax and York basically next door? :dk:

So no reason he couldn't have lived in York and played for Halifax then.
It was a move to his hometown club on more money. Frustrating but understandable, particularly during the peak of covid.
