Exeter City v Bury - Saturday 27th September 2014 - Venue: St James Park - KO: 3pm
St James Park:
This Saturday we see Bury making the 500 mile plus trip to Exeter, probably one of their longest trips of the season, there have been many changes this season by Chairman Stewart Day to make Bury a championship side on and off the pitch. One of them is that the squad and staff have been flown down to Exeter on Friday, instead of making the 7 hour coach journey on the morning of the game.
Bury are now 1st in the league and are unbeaten in their last 8 games, winning 6, Exeter made a very poor start to the season and find themselves sitting in 20th, although 2 wins in their last 2 games will give them confidence against a very good Bury side.
Last season this game saw a 2-2 draw, with the return at The JD Stadium saw Bury win 2-0, Exeter have actually only managed 2 wins against Bury in the last 20 years, overall history sees Bury with 17 wins, Exeter with only 7 wins with 9 draws, so a Bury win should be on the cards.
Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale has defender Scot Bennett back in his squad after a knee injury, but Craig Woodman, David Wheeler, David Noble and top scorer Graham Cummins all face late fitness tests.
Bury could start Daniel Nardiello after he came off the bench to score twice against Burton, although with Ryan Lowe 3 in 3 games, ad 5 in 7 for Danny Rose, a tough decision is to be made by manager David Flitcroft. Defender Keil O'Brien remains out with his knee injury, whilst winger Joe Thompson could return as he continues his comeback from cancer.
Daniel Nardiello:
Danny Nardiello knows he is not guaranteed a place in the starting line-up, despite helping fire the Shakers to the top of the League Two table. The 31-year-old forward scored his second and third goals of the season after coming on as a second-half subsitute in last Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Burton Albion.
Nardiello replaced top scorer Danny Rose, who has five goals this season, while strike partner Ryan Lowe took his tally to four with his third goal in as many games. Manager David Flitcroft must now perm two from his three in form strikers for the trip to Exeter. But whoever is given the nod, Nardiello believes Bury are blessed with some great attacking options.
“Between the three of us (Nardiello, Lowe and Rose) that’s 12 goals already,” he said. “That’s three strikers who are scoring and we’ve got a couple more in Clive Platt and James Poole. “We can’t argue with the goals we’re getting between us. If one’s not scoring then another one will.”
The former Manchester United is experienced enough to know that his time will come this season as Bury push for automatic promotion, and he is grateful of the chance to ease back in gently after missing a handful of matches with a groin strain.
"Sometimes it's nice coming on and getting the whole second half because they've tired a bit and you're fresh,” he said. “Rosey's shown it numerous times, coming on for the last half-an-hour, and he's destroyed teams. “I had an injury early in the season and I've been on the bench". “The other strikers have been on fire so you've got to wait for your chance".
Bury manager David Flitcroft has no fears about whether his players will be able to handle the pressure of being league leaders. The Shakers knocked Burton Albion off the top of the League Two table on Saturday with a 3-1 win against Gary Rowetts’ side. And they now travel down to Exeter this weekend as the team to be shot at.
But Flitcroft is confident that, following last season’s successful battle to beat relegation, his players have the quality and mental toughness to make the top spot their own.
“We were there to be shot at last season. Everyone said when I came in that we were doomed,” he said. “I think the pressure of going out of the league, for a club like Bury, is massive. “These players performed miracles last season. For me, that was pressure. This is a privileged pressure because if we can’t enjoy getting better at what we do then we’ve got the wrong group. And I do believe we’ve got the right group.”

I anticipate that Flitcroft will put out the same side as last week, as he seems to have the philosophy of not changing a winning team. Flitcroft will play his formation of 3-5-2, Louis Van Gaal take notes!
