We still have almost a year until the kickoff of one of the most controversial FIFA World Cup editions in history (more on that later) but we already have a list of national teams that will participate. So, it’s time for a little speculation. And, of course, some odds because bookmakers big and small, from William Hill to Superbet, are already offering bets for the winner of the event. So, without further ado, let’s dig in.

The underdogs

The list of teams that are currently considered the underdogs, with less than a 10% chance to win the tournament, are some of the biggest football powerhouses in Europe: Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and Germany (along with Argentina).

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering that these countries have many foreign players employed by some of their most successful clubs, coming from countries all over the world… but this doesn’t necessarily mean that their domestic players are also great.

Still, there might be surprises - Messi, the Argentine legend currently playing for PSG, is expected to be part of Argentina's World Cup squad. He may be past his prime, but his talent and skill are still his own.

Spain and England

Both Spain and England are nations that are expected to send some of the best players to Qatar next year, with real chances to perform well (and, why not, win) the tournament.

While England fell short in the EURO 2020 finals this year, it is currently rated better at its shot to win the World Cup than Spain.

Remember - both teams have one World Cup title under their belt, with the Spanish team boasting the more recent win in 2010 (England didn’t win a World Cup since 1966).

Brazil and France

Brazil and France are the undisputed favourites for the World Cup title in 2022.

Five-time World Cup winner Brazil has quite a few familiar names in its lineup: goalkeepers Alisson (Liverpool), and Ederson (Man City), centre-backs Marquinhos (PSG) and Éder Militão (Real Madrid), Thiago Silva (Chelsea), and the list could go on and on. With pretty much the entire Brazilian squad consisting of experienced and highly appreciated players with plenty of experience abroad, it’s safe to say that whoever they will face in the World Cup, they’ll give them a hard time.

The current French squad is also not without players with considerable star power: it has players like Pogba and Mbappé, along with several others playing for major European clubs, from Bayern Munich to Chelsea, Juve, and others.

The bookmakers currently expect Brazil and France to have the best chance of winning the World Cup - a final between these two football powerhouses would certainly not be one to miss.
