Carlisle United travel to Hartlepool on Saturday after their first victory in the league this season. Both teams are struggling this season with Carlisle sitting bottom and Hartlepool in 22nd place. Carlisle beat Tranmere 1-0 last time out, whilst Hartlepool picked up a point at home against play-off contenders Portsmouth. The 2012/13 season was the last time these two teams met, with Carlisle victorious in both games, 3-1 at home on Boxing Day and 2-0 at Victoria Park on the 8th September. The overall record of these two teams playing each other is 44-36 in favour of Carlisle. Keith Curle is certainly laying down his mark at the club after he said this in mid-week:
"We went out training on Friday, and unfortunately a couple of the players were talking when I was talking. I asked them if I’d wasted seven hours of my time on set-plays? So they got fined, and then I turned around and one of my staff was coaching when I was coaching – so he also got fined. I only want them for 20 minutes, surely that’s not a lot to ask?"
Curle has also banned Managing Director John Nixon from the dressing room on a match day, in his bid to turn the club around.

Carlisle ‘keeper Mark Gillespie could be out for a while with a ‘long term’ groin injury, whilst Sean O’Hanlon and Antony Sweeney are doubts. Matty Robson and Courtney Meppen-Walter are both still out with knee injuries. Keith Curle may also have brought in two players from Wigan or some other trialists who featured in a behind closed doors friendly on Tuesday, losing 8-0 to a strong Newcastle side. Hartlepool are without Stuart Parnaby after he suffered a knee injury, as well as checking the fitness of winger Jack Compton, after he sustained calf and knee injuries against Portsmouth last weekend. On-loan David Atkinson is also a doubt with a minor knock picked up in training.

Keith Curle is likely to stick with the 4-4-2 formation for Carlisle, with it proving successful when used for him so far under his reign. Billy Paynter may be recalled, but other than that my guess is that the Carlisle team will stay the same, depending on any signings that may happen between now and Saturday. Hartlepool will most likely also play 4-4-2 having played it in their last match, with not many options on the bench for change.

Yet again, with Hartlepool struggling for form, I fancy Carlisle to edge this one with the team gaining confidence after their 1-0 on Saturday.

Nice preview Andy!

So it's the battle of the far northerners then? Could be quite an ugly game this, with both sides formerly league one but now struggling near the wrong end of league 2 after a couple of poor seasons! I fancy Carlisle to turn it round and end up in the top 10 but I'm not sure with Hartlepool. Don't rate the squad or the manager but I do think they will come good in the second half of the season.

Carlisle to win by the odd goal IMO.

Thankyou! Yes it's the battle of the Northerners, and they are quite often good matches between the two. I agree with you, i think Carlisle have got enough in their squad to be top half, at least, where as i think Hartlepool will struggle, due to seemingly having a squad of youngsters with an experienced player in defence, midfield and upfront.
