Much anticipation surrounded the beginning of this championship fixture. Town had been rumoured to have signed the experienced Grant Holt on an emergency loan from pennine rivals Wigan Athletic.

However by 12:30pm the rumour had been confirmed and Holt had been selected in the team but was placed on the bench.

3:00pm arrived and the match began in a rather open fashion; both teams stringing together a number of probing passes but the final killer ball was somewhat illusive in the opening exchanges.

Millwall had their own fair number of chances to take the lead but were not furtuitous in their efforts.

Huddersfield began to press more and twice came close to taking the lead only for Nakhi Wells to be ajudged fouling the Millwall defence. Two quick instances of Wells kicking away the ball in frustration earned the young Bermudan a yellow card.

Despite the frustrations from the Huddersfield front line they didnt have to wait much longer for their efforts to pay dividends. Alex smithies distributed the ball to left back Jack Robinson who in turn played a decisive through ball to the on rushing Harry Bunn. Bunn who controlled well and then turned provider as a swinging left footed cross put the ball in the path of Nakhi Wells. Wells then expertly volleyed the ball into the net beyond the outstretched finger tips of David Forde on 37 minutes.

Town fans in the stadium were estatic as the sublime finish gave them hope of a first home win since March.

However Millwall werent quite ready to throw in the towel and rightly earned the nickname Lions by equalising four minutes later.

Upson received an upfield pass from the Millwall defence and then turned provider for Scott Mcdonald who buried the chance on goal at the first time of asking.

All due credit to Millwall for responding so quickly, but again it will be a lack of concentration from the Huddersfield defence that gives them cause for concern.

The second half started brightly for both sides having regrouped at the interval; fresh and eager to press on.

Both teams continued to press each other, but in the spell where Huddersfield were most dominant is where the game was turned on its head.

The oncoming Harry Bunn had made his way into the penalty box and was almost ready to strike but not before Nicky Bailey had time to bring him down. Huddersfield were awarded a penalty and up stepped Nakhi Wells.

The referee required a moment or two to take control of proceedings and when he blew his whistle there was only one outcome. Wells dispatched the penalty with precision underneath the arms of the stopper Forde. Unfortunate to say the least, as it looked like he almost had his fingertips on it.

The next stoppage in play confirmed for everyone to see the new signing of Grant Holt for Huddersfield; Lee Peltier the man to give way. Holt seemed to add a new dimension to the Town front line and his strength was causing all sorts of problems for the opponents defence. Fair to say he was unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty after being tripped by Shaun Williams.

Millwall's immediate response was to introduce a triple substitution in a bid to a get a foot hold back in the game. Chris Powell responded by replacing Jonathan Hogg; who had an excellent game with pacey winger Sean Scannell.

Despite large amounts of pressure; efforts from both Mark Beevers and Ricardo Fuller at the death were not enough to save the Lions from defeat.

Sheer disappointment for Ian Holloway but sheer relief for Chris Powell who now has his first win as Huddersfield Town boss. The win gave the fans and players alike a huge lift; and removed any outstanding tensions that had been built up throughout the game.

Next up for the travelling terriers is a trip to high flying Wolves on Wednesday evening. The question on most Town fans lips will be was today a one off or is this now a platform to build on.
Millwall fans were left wondering what could have been.

Final score Town 2 Lions 1
