This year has all been about discovering and signing young and talented players, even at the biggest clubs in Europe. High-profile, expensive transfers were rare this summer - instead, clubs preferred players that show promise and are a bit cheaper, considering that the clubs’ purses were pretty thin in 2021. This trend seems to shape everything from transfer contracts to football betting promotions for the foreseeable future, at least until the January transfer window in 2022.

Arsenal’s rumoured upcoming signing seems to confirm the trend. The Gunners are reportedly serious in their intention to sign Romanian wunderkind Ianis Stoica and are willing to pay him a hefty £6.4 million.

Stoica recently made the headlines in his native Romania by switching managers out of the blue, signing with a company run by the owner of his current team, FCSB.

Who is Ianis Stoica

Ianis Stoica is a second-generation professional footballer. His father, Pompiliu Stoica, has played as a defender in various Romanian leagues for more than a decade before signing with FC Moscow. Now retired from active duty, Pompiliu is a football manager.

Stoica Jr. made his debut at the age of 11 with Petrolul Ploiești before being lured to Germany to join the youth side of SC Freiburg in 2016. His stint with the German team was brief - he returned to Romania and joined the FCSB youth academy in 2017. Upon graduating, he joined FCSB’s first team but spent most of his time on loan at various other local clubs. Overall, he played 14 league games with FCSB so far as an attacking midfielder, scoring four times in the process.

Stoica represented Romania internationally at a youth level - he is currently part of the U21 national team, with 4 apps and one goal under his belt.

Switch before leaving

“Ianis Stoica signed with Becali Sport, it was his own choice. The contract is in force starting December 1st,” impresario Dragoș Sîrbu told Fanatik.ro. “We didn’t go to him to convince him, we didn’t kidnap him, he came to us”. This statement came after voices in the local speciality press have accused him of “betraying” his former manager Anamaria Prodan in favour of the Becali brothers.

Stoica’s former manager Anamaria Prodan has had quite a few important Romanian and international players in her portfolio, including former Chelsea player Adrian Mutu, and former Atlético Madrid midfielder Cosmin Contra.

Is Arsenal serious?

According to reports, the Gunners are serious about signing the young Romanian forward. The press, especially the Romanian press is reporting on his chances to join Arsenal since at least late November, which they consider pretty good, pointing out that he is currently the most talented young player in the country.
