It was revealed in the minutes of Oldham Athletic FC that they offered Port Vale £1,000 and two players provided that Port Vale resigned from the League and Oldham took their place!

Port Vale accepted the money, resigned and Oldham were elected into Division Two of the football league.

Any chance of this happening this summer, and which two players would Vale want?

In 1908, more bribe taking in Staffordshire.

A few days after the AGM, Stoke announced they could not continue in the
Football League due to lack of support. Their resignation was accepted.
A Special Meeting was arranged to elect a new member, but before the
Meeting took place Stoke announced they wished to continue in the League.
Stoke, along with Tottenham, Lincoln, Rotherham and Southport stood for
Election and in the ballot Tottenham and Lincoln tied, 20 votes each. The
Management Committee then voted 5-3 in favour of Tottenham Hotspur. It was rumoured that Stoke's original resignation had been encouraged by
Tottenham, who offered financial inducements to Stoke to resign

Think we actually went bust after! Re-formed and took Leeds City place mid season in 1919!

We actually got "expelled" in the 1960's under Sir Stanley Matthews but immediately re-elected too! (although the expulsion was harsh as we made an error and then reported our own error!)

Here is a write up of the 1968 episode

1) so technically Port Vale haven't been Football League members continuously since 1919 then? they've been members from 1919 to 12 May 1968 then again from 8th June 1968 to the present....

2) your young (very very young) forward line included one Paul Ogden..... he was (might still be - not sure) our chief scout

It was also during that time Sir Stan told Ray Kennedy he wouldn’t make it as a footballer. Then joined Arsenal and had a great career with them and Liverpool. Another fine job by the Vale there.

In answer to the question Saint Carol OBE would never do something like that BUT if Scunny could clone a 20 year old Kevin Keegan and Billy Sharp and offer that to us. I can’t think of anyone from Oldham which tells a story of their last twenty years or so.

We've never had any of those episodes in our league history, we seem to be making up for it on our way down. Although we did copy the Vale model of buying and selling until the money ran out.

Piergnianni and Kellor-Dunn are the only 2 of your players I would want and maybe Bahamboula but I hear his form he's fell off a cliff.

Bahamboula played pretty well against us the other week, was really surprised they took him off...didn't look injured...would be surprised if he doesn't stay in the Football League.

A fit Harrison McGahey would be decent enough, problem is fitness, not quality. Sam Hart was reasonable, too, at Dale (in L1) on loan, while I think Northampton fans would confirm that Nicky Adams is a good pro, albeit now 35 y/o.

I love Piergianni, he is exactly what we’ve missed at times against the long ball sides and would snap him up if still at this level next season. If it wasn’t for him we’d have battered Oldham twice last season. As it was a 2-1 narrow win and a 0-0 when we should of had 4 or 5.

Sam Hart we had as a kid in league one and did ok.

Would like to see us go in for Piergianni in the summer. Too good to be playing non league.

He’s bang average at best for L2.

Never impressed against us, whether it's been for Boston in the Conference North, Salford in the Conference or the last couple of years at Oldham. Always assumed he got by because of his exotic name/haircut.
