Cannon's pretty good. Busy, attacking midfielder who just lacks a bit of end product. Played plenty of games for us. The Cowleys are having a squad shake-up and he's fallen victim to that as his contract was up.

So Ipswich fans what are your views of Wilson? Are we actually going to have a decent back line?

Our clear out is happening a bit slower than Ipswich's, but it has really gathered pace over the past week. The Cowley's have now released what was left of Jackett's coaching staff.

So going into next season we will have a new CEO, new manager and coaching team, a new squad and a new academy setup. Pompey 2.0 is what I'm calling it, but nobody else is.

Now looking unlikely that any of our out of contact players are re-signing. We're also seemingly open to offers for any of our contracted players (e.g Curtis, Marquis etc). They're tearing it all down to try to remove the stench of failure.

We had him here for a couple of seasons and he's a weird player IMO.

He wasn't better than Shackell and Bostwick in L2, didn't look anything special yet you look at his playing record and he's spent a decent amount of time in L1 and with a couple of decent sized Clubs as well so he must have a bit of something about him.

Broke his ankle here (possibly his full debut) and never got back in the team for any length of time, having the odd short spell at RB.

A pretty forgettable spell. I don't think many Lincoln fans could actually tell you what his strength is, but whether that's because he's a pretty well rounded L1 defender or very basic and will 'do a job', I don't know.

Cheers. Well, a basic League 1 player would be an upgrade for us.

How is the Academy changing?

We've brought in a new Academy head - Greg Miller. Also the Cowley's will be much more involved with youth development than previous first-team management.

We had quite a big cull of academy graduates a month back. It seems like the production line has stalled over the last few years.

They got given a free reign here as well with coaching staff, they got rid of everyone and started from scratch. Our coaching clear-out was needed, mind. Some had been around for years and we needed a clean break from everyone. The medical, recruitment and sports science ones they appointed are still here (with additions as we've expanded those areas).

He'll probably bring someone called Ross Poynton in as a medical consultant who oversaw our medical provisions here (mainly because he put together a young group in that area).

Interesting to see that other clubs still appear to be fishing for established players from football league clubs, post covid financial losses.

We're being told that due to huge losses being incurred over the past 12 months that non-league is where it's at for value, as we continue to try to fight the tide and run sustainably in an 'eat what you kill' club policy.

Like K Win says above, a chunk of established first teamers have been offered new deals on less than what they were on and understandably have gone off to look elsewhere. No big loss and a clear out is just what is needed. The big problem will be trying to shift the contracted players some of whom are on decent contracts at this level, and are unlikely to get better elsewhere. Being lumbered with deadwood taking up a chunk of the budget leaves less money to really strengthen with quality.

Early days yet, but I don't see us being one of the front runners next season.

Having seen numerous financial disasters at the club in 30 odd years, I am reasonably content with this policy, but a growing number of our fan base are starting to get restless with our 'billionaire' owners and expect them to subsidise a charge to finally get out of the bottom two divisions for the first time in a decade. The view is that now is the time to show a hand of strength, similar to how it played out during the post ITV digital collapse where we invested the Peter Crouch money and walked away with the league.

Reports linking us with Andy Cannon, which doesn't surprise me if he's from around this way wanting a move back up north. What type of midfielder is he & is any decent?

In his early starts he really caught the eye with his no-nonsense combative style, and was involved in everything but to a point that he could only last an hour and came off shattered. He has built himself physically since then.

But he has never developed his football brain. He runs and runs but often with the ball until he loses it. One of the few midfielders i've ever seen who can actually appear to tackle himself as he jets off with the ball at his feet with such ferocity that he ultimately loses control of it and is virtually tackling himself to try and regain control.

Scorer of the odd spectacular goal, but statistically hasn't contributed much in over 50 odd starts now.

With some patience and coaching he has the potential to be a decent player at this level, but the Cowley's have seen enough to pass.

Tbh, I'm not sure that NL is where the value is at anymore. Gone at the days of proper bargains like when Keith Alexander signed McLean, Boyd and Makail-Smith for Posh for naff all. It's certainly not the hunting ground it once was. The odd one will pop up when they're out of contract (for us, Sean Raggett for £35k compensation and sold him for £350k release clause a year later).

There's far too much money in the NL nowadays, and a more professional set-up, and players can pick up £1k-£2k/week at some Clubs no problem so they don't even push too hard for moves anymore.

We hardly ever delved into the NL under Cowley at EFL level and those who were from NL background were generally chopped from the squad. The step up to L1 is also huge so it's a very small pool of players.

I'm with you. If it was that easy everyone would be doing it.

For every Jamal Lowe we've signed from NL there's a Louis Dennis etc.

They are still there but as a smaller pool. We got Rob Atkinson from Eastleigh in January 2020.

We got Ricardo Santos from NL and George Thomason(who is a cracking player btw) but like you guys say there are plenty who flopped as well... There will still be the odd gem.

Set to miss out on Sonny Bradley and Jordon Rhodes, the former staying with Luton and the latter opting to join Huddersfield.

The value these days is probably in smart use of the loan market and picking up players released from Premiership and Championship academies.

That is exactly where teams who get promoted from lge 2 should shop
We did exactly that in the January window.
The downside is you cannot build a team like this if you have 5/6 loans per window.

Mullin to Rotherham doing the rounds this morning. Wonder how many he scores at this level. Eoin Doyle’s record in league 1 is actually better than league 2 and he reckons it’s because there are fewer teams that just sit in and defend so he gets more space. Also Stockton linked to Bradford along with his manager... hopefully he isn’t on our list as rumoured.

Genuinely can't believe Rotherham never gave Jerry Yates a chance. Probably would've kept them up in the Championship this season. Paul Mullin certainly isn't as good as Jerry Yates either...

(EDIT: Seen he made a fair few appearances in 17-18, but that was before he developed an eye for goal at Carlisle and, most notably, at Swindon.)

Can see us going back for Madine if/when Blackpool get promoted...A much better player than stockton

I genuinely wouldn’t mind that. We need a more physical option. Sold him for 6m ... bring him back for free. Just wonder if his character is what Evatt would want? The dressing room gets on so well and he is a bit of a loose cannon.

He had his chances but he was knocked around too easily, wasn't particulary quick and his mother was a pain in the arse apparently.

He clearly imptoved at Swindon and has had a great season at Blackpool, good luck to the lad.

If Blackpool don't go up, I have no doubt he will come back and bite us on the arse but you can say the same about Clark-Harris.
Sometimes it just doesn't happen at certain clubs, then the players go on to make you look a complete burke.

We're being linked to yet another Irish youngster, which is clearly an area we're targeting having signed three last year and lost out on one to Oxford this season.

Rumours that we're interested in St Johnstone striker Guy Melamed. However, the fact that Ipswich and Sunderland are also interested will no doubt rule us out. No chance we will be able to compete with them, salary-wise.

Like most clubs, I'm not expecting too much actual transfer activity until June 1st.
