Everything is very short term at PNE, we're only a bad crop of loan players away from a struggle, especially if we lose both Johnson & Whiteman this season.
I think you could say that about most clubs in the EFL. Our best players in the last 2 seasons were loans.
Teams change so much every summer now that last season has very little foresight into what will happen next season.
PNE do seem to be running the club the right way though unlike some others chasing the dream at other expenses.

our ex-midfielder Nick Freeman signs on a free for St. Evenage.

7/10 signing that, he featured a lot for us and is a good player (creative attacking midfielder) - the reason we let him go is that even though he made a lot of apps for us, we couldn't guarantee him a regular starting berth, so we let him go.

Best of luck to the lad.

We had Freeman in the covid season, he didn't pull up many trees for us, but we had a below average season.

Yeah, I remember that. To be fair, I didn't particularly rate him before he went on loan to you, but he's come on as a player since then.

I would have been quite happy to have kept him, but he was (understandably) getting pissed off at being treated as a squad player (even if he did make a ton of apps).

:bg: It must have been bad to gift us 6 points and only score 1 against us.
I dont know what it is with Charlton. every season I think you have a good squad on paper but are never challenging. Probably the biggest underachievers in the league alongside Portsmouth

Club has been mismanaged for years.

Despite that, we’ve had it better than Portsmouth, we did win the play-offs in 2019 only to come straight back.

I'll always have a soft spot for Charlton especially as you had to suffer Garner as well! Great away day too

In addition to Freeman, we've also signed Alex MacDonald from Gillingham. Will be the third time MacDonald has played under Steve Evans.

Two signings I'd have been very happy with in League Two - remains to be seen how they work out for us at this level.

He's easily good enough for this level, plus I imagine having not been automatic first choice for us and having been pissed off with that, I imagine he'll certainly be keen to prove himself as a starter in the first XI.

But players have to find their role within the team and fit in with how the manager wants to play, so we'll see how that goes.

I’d be surprised if Alex MacDonald is up to league one standard these days. Good league two signing.

Is Jamie Proctor good enough for League 1?

I see you have released him.

Honestly probably not any more. Just don’t think his body can hold up to it. Had a couple of pretty serious injuries during his time with us. Maybe as someone to bring on for 15 minutes in some circumstances he wouldn’t be the worst option but at this point I don’t see what he does that Ryan Edmondson already wouldn’t.

Was thinking he’d drop down the leagues or more likely retire at this point.

Hard to say as he was injured much of the season and never really got much game time when he was back.

If your signing with a view to being your main striker the injuries would be the big problem, I expected him to retire or go part time personally (he has a business I believe so thought he’d focus on that).

Was superb in League Two but again he just couldn’t get fit for any real period of time. His goal against Sutton was one of the best I’ve seen down Vale so the ability is there and that was bonkers.

He’s never been good enough for L1, amazed he managed to get a gig at Port Vale.

In hindsight we probably shouldn’t have given him a new contract last summer and Flitcroft admitted as much at a fans forum last week. I guess it was more a thank you for what he did helping us get promoted.

Looks like we're currently working on deals to bring back Charlie Kelman from QPR on another season long loan and re-signing Macauley Bonne.

Kelman did ok for us last season, fits Wellens style but not the most clinical in front of goal. He did score the most out of all our strikers though with 7 goals.

Bonne would also fit our style of play, but if he does rejoin us he will probably be expected to hit the ground running........

Oh well, looks like we will just have to sign Alfie May or David Mcgoldrick instead then.
What you need is another Hugh Mcilmoyle-- Best player I've seen for Carlisle. He was excellant at the " Shit " as well.

Proctor is a decent league 2 player and did very well for us in our promotion season. Lovely bloke too. But I just don't think he's quite got the ability or body to thrive in league 1. He's one who will graft and put himself about but hasn't quite got the technical ability that you need a bit more in league 1. Top professional though.

Don't think I'd want Proctor back at Brunton Park, certainly not in league 1. Nothing against him, just think we need a little bit more quality if we're going to consolidate in the third tier.

No-one will say a bad word about Regan - never injured, always gives 100%, happy to get kicked in the head and throw himself into tackles, a good defender and a nice guy as well.

It'll be interesting to see how he gets on in the Championship because his attributes would suggest he's capable of playing at the level. He's not the tallest but has a good spring on him and is a front foot, aggressive (in the sense of attacking the ball) defender, so that's not a problem. Where he might get caught out is his lack of genuine pace. He's not slow, but at Championship level I'm not sure whether he'll get caught out or not by that (he played here mainly in a three but can play RB). Not sure I'd class him as a ball playing CB either but he's not bad on the ball.

He's still fairly young anyway, 24, and plenty of experience and game time behind him (125 or so in 2½ seasons for us) so plenty of time to develop further.

Even if it doesn't work out, he's a good L1 defender so a pretty risk free out of contract signing because someone will buy him. Similar to how I viewed Scully to Wigan last season (albeit they paid for him).

Cheers pal. We are looking to lower the squad age and he ticks a lot of boxes.

Alan Nixon reporting we’ve offered a deal to Josh Sheehan at Bolton. He’s been offered a new deal to stay at Bolton so I guess it comes down to the playing time we can offer him, assuming we can get close to his wage demands.

Would be an excellent signing for us.

Signed a new two year deal with us today.
