Sounds like we are in talks with Kion Etete. Not the best scoring record but sounds very much like a Jones player at 6ft 6, winning flick ons to feed May/Leaburn.

As Si Robin has said, hes not a target man type at all despite his physical stature. We had him on loan prior to going to Cheltenham and he was excellent. He is clearly technically gifted and has real strength. He scored 2 on debut and then had a lengthy drout but people were not on his case because the rest of his play was still great. Then the goals started to come and Spurs terminated his loan so he could join a club in L1.

I always thought he would go on to be a player sold for 7 figures at some point without doubt, would have him back in a heartbeat. Would be a great signing for Charlton.

Why? Pretty easy to tune this stuff out and just focus on the fact we're in league one with one of the largest budgets because of him. Who gives a shit if he says somd goofy shit here and there, he's a comedic writer/actor.
Yeah I get that, but then that fuels the amount of shit people read when you get the sensationalist headlines then as people don't read articles, they jump down the throat of what they want to do with our club. Does my head in.

Yeah its great we're back in L1, but as if Bale will join us. He's been retired for 5 years even when at Madrid!

We've offered a deal to James Gibbons according to someone on our message board.

Bristol Rovers fans didn't seem to rate him but I really like him. No nonsense fullback who will run through a brick wall for you. A proper old school player who I want in my ranks when the tough gets going.

Thanks for the insight both! He sounds quite similar to Leaburn then tbh, also tall and physical but not very useful in the air. Jones clearly likes a physical striker, sounds like a much better signing than the stats would suggest.

Cant deny the effort he put in, but severely lacking in quality when here

Agreed, effort was for all to see(trying to get a contract for the following season) but I just don’t see enough quality in him.

Lewis Fiorini a done deal according to Pete O’Rourke.

Apparently Lewis Bate’s mum is following the club after he was released from Leeds. Not sure which spotty kid in our fan base manages to find that out!

Pretty awful loan spell at us where he spent a lot of time in the U21s. When he did play for the seniors he didn't do anything of note but can't really say we saw enough of him for a fair judgement!

Would love Bate. I do wonder if bigger teams at this level may want him though.

Fiorini sounds like he has talent but looks like he's not done much to impress in his loans going off Charlton fans. I think he did OK at Lincoln. We were in for him in January before he went to Charlton and is a Manchester lad, I had a feeling he'd come here tbh.

They can correct me if I'm wrong, but think Fiorini was ok at Blackpool too. There wasn't ample chance for him at Charlton so wouldn't read too much into his time here. He was brought in by Appleton and then Jones came in and didn't play him. He has a wicked free kick on him though.

Bate would be a really good signing at this level. We seem to get linked with him every window lately but nothing so far this.

Bate for MK Dons last season at Edgeley Park was the first player I've seen lose 5-0 and still arguably be the best player on the pitch. Very good technically, do wonder if he's not the most defensively sound DM considering the goals they conceded that day and the goals MK gave up in other games. Fantastic on the ball though, was miles ahead of L2 in that aspect.

I wouldn't be getting too giddy about Fiorini despite coming from Man City, he's your typical lightweight, tippy-tappy PL Academy type. Not tall, not particularly strong, not particularly quick/fast etc, got a decent long shot on him at times but flatters to deceive.

He started off ok here, was decent towards the end of his loan spell as well but in between he was way off it and from memory was consigned to sub appearances from around Xmas when even Appleton got fed up of him despite giving him waaayyy more opportunities than he should have. We tried him in CM when we were desperate for bodies but predominately a wider position drifting inside.

He's had three decent loan moves in us, Blackpool and Charlton butnot really done much of note in those three seasons.

Yeah there's plenty of reservations about him. Don't think he'll be gifted a spot in our 11 by any stretch so he'll have to earn it.

I quite liked him. He was very reliable. He looked a bit out of sorts when played in that back 3 when we had that absurd injury hit to practically our entire back line but we just about got away with it.

Definitely hoping there is more in the Lewis Bate rumour. I was gutted that he went to MK Dons if he was available to a league two club especially when it was rumoured we were after a DM in that window.

Getting him on a permanent would be even better

Vale fans loved him but I was never as convinced. Yes, he'll give his absolute all and is a run through a brick wall type, but he does lack quality. Vale fans have a tendency to laud those who run around a lot over those with quality.

Decent enough for a league 2 full back but he's most certainly at best a bottom end league 1 player, if that. Also, injury prone, so I would say a risk for a team that struggled last year.

I'm with Arbury on Gibbons. Our fan base seem to really like him but I think he's ok ish. We need to be looking at better for starting players but if he's cheap enough I don't mind him as a back up to Bennett and the starting LWB.

What's Birmingham's financial like? Are they able to offer the £10k wages a week that Wrexham were offering, because that would obviously be a swinger.

Really deserves to be playing Championship football, but I guess Oxford are going to be one of the favourites to go back down, and unless a more established Championship team want to take a punt I think those options are closer than you think.

Lots of moaning that we're losing out on targets because our budget is limiting us to offer League two wages at the moment, so can't help feel a bit of jealously and getting such a bargain at 300k. We were never ever going to play in that wage pool though.

Are Wrexham really offering so much?
I have watched with interest three or four players turn Wrexham down already this summer.

Northampton should follow Lincoln/Oxford/Bolton blue print and keep improving year on year and if that means you miss out on players you help further their careers so be it.
We have had three players in the last two seasons who were stand out players in league one who we had no chance of retaining....That is just life down here

Who are these players Wrexham have missed out on Masi? You are the oracle of football even though you don't go away from home due to being poor

It was based on a fan on their forum who knows one of our coaches apparently. Obviously may not be accurate, but at his age profile and ability to grow and potentially sell on and ability at this level I think Leonard would me a marquee signing for them in the same way Mullin was back in their non-league days, and they might be willing to go that hard on wages for him.

I don't think anyone here expecting Leonard to come back really, we were lucky to have him on loan for two whole years as even that was unusual, but I think the expectation that he'd be in the Championship at least so wouldn't come back to haunt us the following year.

I don't think we have the ability to risk the finances to go for it even if we wanted to, there will almost certaintly be a lot of missing out, but I imagine that's similar to other clubs in our position like Cambridge and Exeter. In League 2 we were around top 10 budget and had two years of 3rd and 4th under Brady, and likewise last year we were around 17th in Budget and finished 14th, so we've consistently hit a little bit above out weight year on year which is my main hope - that 17th budget will have definitely slipped down to 20th at best with the teams coming up.

Why don't you go away from home?
The pandemic and the transport system ended going away for me. I have been all around the country and a European campaign following Bolton, plus i started to go to more and more National Hunt meetings which is another passion of mine.
Life changes and values may also stop me going to some home games next season. It is what it is

We’ve signed Kell Watts on a 2 year deal from Newcastle United. A CB who was on loan at Wigan athletic last season.

Also had loans at Peterborough and Plymouth so a good amount of appearances for a 24 year old at this level.

Would be happy for us to overpay if required in this instance as the player is young and seemingly a big talent.

We were paying mega, record-breaking money in the NL and L2 to ensure we got here ASAP but now it is naturally levelling out considering some the teams in this league.

Looks like Dion Rankine is signing for Wigan. Did OK with us, but not always in the side so interesting to see how he does there
