Mingoia was outstanding against us at the Abbey earlier in the season, probably the best performance against us along with Windass in the same game. Absolutely delighted with that signing.

I tell you something that has absolutely done my nut in this last month or so.

Crewe fans on Mad, Facebook, Twitter and the like literally linking us to nearly every player we've released in the last three or four years. Morecambe release Adam Dugdale for not being good enough "Bring him home", Shrewsbury transfer list Matt Tootle "Bring him home" Plymouth's Kelvin Mellor out of contract "Bring him home" Ajay Leitch-Smith rejects a contract at Vale "Bring him home" Abdul Osman released from Partick, Mathias Pogba a free agent at Partick, Antoni Sarcevic released by Fleetwood (since signed for Shrewsbury), Michael O'Connor released by Vale, Byron Moore on his way out of Vale, Uche's a free agent after Watford released him and the world will end now the woeful Brad Inman is leaving us. I've even seen nonsensical posts that say we should put in a cheap bid to Carlisle for Mark Ellis!

Seriously are our fans so used to mediocrity and failure that they believe the only way for us to progress forward is to bring back a ton of players who have all experienced failure with us in the last few years? I don't mind us signing an ex player in Lowe because he can offer so much more than say Haber, but when mental toughness is something that just isn't in our squad, why do we think going back and signing those we castaway in the last few years would make any difference to our league position?

Give me Devitt and other young and hungry professionals a chance at this club over our rejects any day of the week!

Oh God please, please, please 'bring Kelvin Mellor home'.

I thought Gundogan would be signing of the day, then I seen this.

Good signing, Cambridge.

That's a great signing for Cambridge, Mingoia has always impressed me whenever I've seen him against us. With us looking for 2/3 wingers, I was hoping we'd be in for him.

Accrington are really going to need some quality in to replace the lads off to Rangers and Mingoia

It's pretty much always been the way, every summer. Admittedly I used to want every single ex player back. Then we got Craig Hignett back... And if there was ever a case for not treading over old ground! Although, yeah, it is nuts how players virtually hounded out of the club for being shit (not naming Higdon) are then wanted back by fans as soon as they become "unattached".

I find it much more bemusing though that fans are already lapping up Davis' usual rhetoric after one signing (but still, as it stands, a weaker squad than last season). Season ticket sales also on track (if the club can be believed). It's not at all surprising but it gives you little hope that anything will truly change. I think most of the fan base have truly forgotten how far up shit creek we are, cos the sun is out and Davis is "talking to players".

Goalkeeper James McKeown signed a new 2 year deal, superb news. Consistently been the best keeper in non league since he arrived and will hopefully continue in the same way up here.

He wasn't the best last season, was he? Good keeper (lovely guy, too) but I predict you'll have another guy in between the sticks by December.

Always came across over-rated by Grimsby fans to me.

Last season was certainly his weakest but overall based on his entire spell at us, there have been no better keeper consistently in non league for me (and for many other non league fans based on him always making TOTY)

Any reason for thinking we'll have a new #1?

Just a hunch, that's all. Better keepers will be available in L2. McKeown is a very steady keeper but his kicking isn't the best and he is prone to the odd mistake.

Produced some of the finest performances I've seen from a keeper in my time supporting Grimsby.

His performance against Wrexham in the Trophy final was probably up there as the best. He can't save penalties to save his life though so I predict 6 points will be going to Barnet.

I agree with the kicking/distribution, gets rid of it far too quickly and inaccurately for my liking. His shot stopping is absolutely second to none mind you.

Yeah but he more than compensates for that with his BANTER. And shot stopping.

Always liked him, and would agree he was the most consistently good keeper in non-league for a few years. Hard to pitch completely as there have been better keepers, but they've not stuck around long.

Fair enough. I remember them being the best side we played this (last) season but didn't identify specific individuals. If he was a key part of that then I'm delighted.

Obviously his play off goal v Wimbledon was a good strike so bodes well.

We've released Scot Bennett by mutual consent. Looks like Sheridan wasn't that impressed by him at Newport!

Is Windass even that good? Obviously I've not seen much of him but he just seemed to score a shit load of pens.

Best opposition player to play at HP this season by a country mile! Many others from other clubs have said the same.

McKeown is a great shot stopper, which to a lot of people makes him a good goal keeper, it helps, but its his decision making, and his distribution which sometimes isn't there

Not a fan of Devitt. Always looked crap when he's played against us.
Is this the same Jamie Devitt - the proclaimed greatest ever player in non league football without playing a game?

It can only be good news that we are shipping out the dead wood. I really hope he takes an axe to this squad to get some decent footballers in

I'd disagree with the other town fans and say that this season, Mckeowns kicking and distribution got better while his shotstopping (particularly long shots) has weakened. Wasn't the best keeper in the league last season but he has been very consistent. His overall game is better and he's still very capable of a world-class save once every few games.

We tried to sign Benjani in League 2 when Sven was here. Would've been great.
