Slightly off topic, someone has posted this on our board. It relates to games in the old Div 4 (now L2) in 1986. Just look at the attendances, 6 teams had less than 2000 (Wrexham only just into four figures), 4 with less than 3000,though bizarrely Mansfield had 8000, presumably a promotion party.

Just goes to show how far we have come since those days.
Good to see famous faces Paul Heaton and Neville Chamberlain getting in the goals too.

Over 1,000 now - must be a big game.

I'm informed we took 3,000 to Notts County in 2003. That's our best, non-cup, away following ever. We won't get near that on Saturday for a number of reasons.

Yes, and they will tell you they've always been massive ...

Well not really. We were coming off the back of successive relegation from the second tier, the town was on its arse with the coal mines closing a few years earlier and the Steelworks on its way out. Also I can't imagine Torquay brought many.

That is low even for the bad times, although I think we dipped under a thousand a few times around that time.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
Those 80’s crowds I’d imagine were just down to the overall state of country at the time.

It would have been peak time when Thatcher had frankly helped close down nearly everything up and down country, people were probably very worried on the finances, plus football was a very angry and unsafe place to go back then.

Remember my first games in 1988 at Carlisle and the atmospheres were actually much louder at times with just 2000 fans than now with 6000……but a lot of that ‘atmosphere’ was just very nasty abuse

I still to this day remember the atmosphere from a game in 1991, crikey over 30 years now when we lost at home 4-0 to Gillingham, middlemass was sacked the next day and about 1500 spent 90 minutes frankly abusing their own team in some of the most graphic audio ways you could get…….probably took us to mid 90’s to appeal really.

Tremendous crowds, particularly Carlisle given the distance and the season they've had.

Now the regular season is over, I will post my top three away crowds this season and my reasons.

3rd - Fleetwood. A surprise to many, but the support they were given in the second half when they were behind and desperate for points was impressive.

2nd - Derby. Always tremendous support, sold out well in advance for a Tuesday night following, and lots of noise.

1st - Blackpool. What is it about Fylde? Easily the loudest fans even though it was their first away game after relegation. Didn't stop all game despite a pretty dull 0-0.

Well done to all though, can't criticise anyone this season.

Interestingly, Fleetwood had the lowest away following at 16 teams this season. Wycombe and Cheltenham have lowest at 3 each, and Bristol Rovers end up with lowest following at Fleetwood.

I'll post the home figures once I find the Fleetwood home attendance from yesterday.

Thought Bolton were a shoo-in for second after the last updated table in February when we were second, Took big followings to Blackpool, Wigan, Derby, Barnsley and Peterborough. Also sold out at Northampton, Stevenage and Bristol Rovers. Portsmouth must have had some great turn outs.
