How did you rate him against other long term commentators and is the standard better or worse now than it has been?

He should have been put out to pasture about 20 years ago.

He wasn't the most insightful but he had an iconic voice (probably due to his longevity more than anything else) that lent a certain weight to internationals and cup games.

But yeah Motty's great. Should have gone about 10 years ago mind you but an iconic voice. His commentary on Chelsea's FA Cup Final win in 1996 over Boro when Di Matteo scored in 45 seconds is my first memory in football. I can still recite it word by word.

"That's a great forward run by Hughes and Di Matteo shoots. Oh, what about this, what about this! It's the quickest ever goal in a Wembley Cup Final. An unbelievable start by Chelsea. Ruud Gullit scratches his head, possibly he can't believe it either. The italian Di Matteo has struck a shot into the roof of the net. This could be an historic moment in cup finals. It fizzes over Ben Roberts, into the roof of the net."
