A football club's opening game of the season will go ahead as planned after it obtained a new safety certificate for its stadium.

Financially-troubled Southend United needed approval from Southend Council to play at Roots Hall stadium.
The club said Saturday's Vanarama National League opener against Oldham Athletic would go ahead as scheduled and thanked fans for their support.

Southend United have been docked 10 points by the National League following a High Court decision to grant a final 42-day deadline to the club to avoid being wound up.

Owner Ron Martin said the sale of the club to an unnamed Australian buyer should be finalised next month.
But they have yet to clear a £275,000 debt owed to HM Revenue & Customs.

The deduction means Southend go bottom of the table on minus four points, but they are expected to appeal.

Unsworth finally gone from Oldham. Am amazed he’s hung on so long given how things usually work in football nowadays. IF he’d do it and he felt ready for a return to football, this would tick a lot of boxes for Darrell Clarke I think. They’re a similar club to us so Oldham would be smart to at least enquire.
