PC won't boot or POST

Ok so my pc won't boot up, beep or POST. I thought it was a graphics card issue as it was starting to get freezing video, the card resetting in windows then finally crashing and resetting the computer. A day later it needed three attempts to get the computer booting from cold, then after 15 mins it crashed and reset again but was ok and ran for the next 8 hours or so.

The following day the computer switched on, no beeps, POST etc, resets after five seconds or so, comes back on but doesn't do anything except have the fans running. Tried breadboarding by disconnecting all components including RAM and no change. Anyone any ideas? Could it be a dead mobo or PSU going? I think the CPU is fine. Any techies here had similar issues?

Try disassembling the whole rig, including the CPU and heatsink (maybe re-apply the thermal paste) and firmly re-connecting everything. Something could just be loose or dislodged. If it's still dead I'd probably try swap-testing the PSU as a starting point. Sounds like it could be dying, or not up to the job.

Yeah I'm thinking it's the PSU but I don't have another to test with. I've been bitten on one of those before as went to a computer shop to buy one when I was building my rig but it wasn't adequate and kept switching off, so I got a 600W cooler master which has been very stable but most of my components are 10 years old now, and my case is falling apart and I don't even have a power switch to turn it on and have to do it via screwdriver!

Perhaps this is my system telling me it's time to get a new one. Been thinking about it for a while anyway but dunno if I can be bothered with the hassle of finding parts then building a new system from scratch, or pay a but more for one that's already built. Couldn't come at a worse time either as I need to put the car in the garage as well!

if you get stuck i've got an i5 2500k and a z68 mobo with 2 working ram slots with 2x 4gb ram you can have for the cost of posting it. was gonna use it for a media pc for the living room but it's been sat doing nothing for months now and i cba anymore.

Cheers mate my ram sticks are fine I believe and will probably hand them to my brother in law for his pc. I'm browsing through the latest hardware to catch up on it again then I'll make a decision by next week either to buy a ready made pc or build one myself.

Got the car to hand in for a service tomorrow and I spent over 50 quid on another whisky today perhaps I better start saving the pennies!

no bother. just try not to electrocute yourself with that screwdriver in the mean time you lunatic. it's quite possible prodding it with a screwdriver is the reason you're having problems with the pc in the first place

What are you even prodding with a screwdriver? Is the power button not hooked up to the mobo or do you literally not have the plastic power button the case?!
