By reports, Assad is struggling and losing ground, with various factions of rebels gradually eroding territory, with the West not exactly unhappy about that situation continuing. If Russia wants Assad to stay in power, then that could be an interesting conflict of interests.

dunno how true the article is as i haven't seen it in any reputable or reputableish sources, but there is a russian naval facility at tartus, so it ain't exactly a big deal that russian vessels will stop off at a russian base. intel does suggest russia are considering more overt support for assad tho
I got it from Jon Snow with an "If this is true......" but, true or not, I see it as reminder of what we are potentially getting into when we start joining military action where the big boys are playing out their power games.

we (well, the coalition) are the big boy

and lol at that true or not caveat. "well i saw a story reporting on aliens on mars, true or not this now non-existent piece of evidence is clear proof there are aliens on mars". deductive reasoning at its finest

As much as Assad is a bastard, he still has a large amount of support and if he was to lose, alawites and Christians would be in even more danger than they are already.

Baring in mind I used to work on UK Submarines, this might be bs or might not be. But if Russia wanted us to know it is heading there, it would be on the surface in plain sight. It's how they work.

Russia has reportidly sent two "tank landing ships" whatever they are, and also additional aircraft to Assad in recent days. Also Russian looking soldiers pictured operating in Syria.

That's according to BBC radio this lunchtime.

No mention at all of a sub.
