So, as the big day approaches and we look forward to renewing our somewhat strange but enjoyable hostile (between the fans on Match Day only!!) rivalry... What are we expecting from the season from both sets of fans, expected line ups and outcome of the game.

I think we'll be top 7 as we are, but if Ellis Plummer and Robbie Weir sign contracts as hoped then I'd say top 3 for us as we're still a few players short.

Injuries to Binnom-Williams and Wiseman will leave us weakened at the back, but hopefully Wiseman will be fit for Saturday, although very unlikely.

Our midfield is still looking a bit lightweight and the addition of Robbie Weir would be welcomed.

Up top, I think we'll scare the living daylight out of L2. Ugwu looks the absolute business and the step up from Woking won't be any problem at all. Brewster offers pace, trickery and an eye for goal, whilst we know from last year what Kristian Dennis is capable of. Add in Chris O'Grady and Ricky German who has had a great pre season and we look as strong as anyone up front.

I think Grimsby will challenge for PO's and will present a stern challenge come Saturday, though the loss of Omar Bogle is a big one...have you replace wisely Mariners fans?

Prediction 3-1 CFC

Going for a narrow win, but more out of nervous hope than anything. Hoping for a big atmosphere, with a lot of our lot probably turning up for the first game just to see whether anythings changed, and of course Grimsby having a good following. Should be easily over 7k.

I'd like the same team as yesterday, as I think at home we've got to take it to teams, and our front line is deadly if we show enough confidence in it.

Anyon.

Barry Hird Evatt Dion

Reed Weir Sinnott

COGBA Ugwu Dennis

Only thing is, I don't know if GC might start McCourt instead of Reed for experience. Also, I'm still unsure how Wiseman fits in if we play 4 at the back. Does he replace Hird or Barry?

Looking forward to it anyway.

Notice you've got Weir in there PO.... Have I missed summat on Bob's Board (Dave Waller's 'Tache) has he been confirmed??

Would be fantastic if we could nab Plummer as well, he looked the part against Millers on Tuesday!!

Nah mate, pure hope. But there will have to be a good reason for us not to. Keep saying we're in the market for an experienced mid, and we have one that's slotted in to our side, the fans love, and clearly sees us as enough of a fit to have stuck around this close to the season.

If he doesn't sign, and we muck up, you'd expect McCourt to fill that gap.

Whilst we're on midfield, I'm not sure where dimaio fits either. He's been picked out for praise by GC, but our midfield worked the best I'd seen it yesterday without him..

Didn't go yesterday so can't comment on CDM. GC does seem to like him though so I'm not sure.

Hope he sticks with 433 though but good point with Wiseman.

He's too good to leave out, but Brad hasn't put a foot wrong in the games I've seen pre season and I love Hirdy. It's good to have these dilemmas though when you compare with last year.

Caldwell has really impressed me over the summer, your thoughts on how he's gone about his business?

McCourt is the obvious choice for me if we don't offer Weir a contract (Which in my eyes would be absolute insanity!!)

Edit - Doesn't young Louis Reed look good, I'm surprised Urinals have let him out on a season long loan, and you could argue with the league one experience he's had with United that we're better off with him rather than Brooks :)

Controversial, but I think Hird would be the one to go. GC is a big fan of full backs bombing on, and Barry is great at that.

I think we've done fairly well in the market. My memories of League two have always been ones where there hasn't been much between all the teams, bar certain elements.. Players who change games. Now we'd have loved a better midfield, maybe even a more marquee signing in net, but you can't doubt our front line. I'm not saying it's the best in the league, but on paper, Brewster, COGBA, Dennis and Ugwu are plain scary. I think we have good defensive options to keep it balanced. But my favourite season of all time was a side under Sheridan who won this league probably letting in at least a goal a game. But the fact was, we had the fire power to counter act that.

I missed Sheff utd and Rotherham for work, so it was my first time seeing Reed - what a little player he is. And to be fair to the lad, I didn't see him get pushed off the ball once for such a supposed 'lightweight'. In fact, it was him who cleared that twot May after he'd pollaxed Sinnott.

Sinnott was a big positive for me yesterday. Looked the most off the pace in early games, but he's clearly been working hard and looks ready to go.

I'm not quite as positive as you guys and won't be st the game either.

The 3 pre season games I've seen I've not really been that impressed but heard we were better against Sheff U, Donny, Matlock and Rotherham so hopefully we have got a half decent side together.

Feel we may get beat but will go for 1-1 and a 7k+ crowd

Can't make the game due to work and I've not seen any of the pre-season friendlies, so I'm really not sure what to expect. I just can't wait for football to be back! The off-season is just horrible.

We have an old, but experienced defence, which could be vital in gaining them few extra points needed!

We have about 7-8 players that can play CM for us, and not too many of them are any good!

Going forward we look very dangerous, without having signed our number 9 yet!

Look out for our number 27, he has huge potential and gets the fans very excited!

Our original 7-8 CMs has now been whittled down to about 3-4 due to injuries so we could end up starting that dreaded York midfield of Berrett and Summerfield.

I'm happy our defence is up against Chesterfield's forwards because they're more likely to be able to handle them than pacey forwards (that isn't to say Chesterfield's forwards aren't good)!

Ugwu and Brewster are both pacy PH, although I don't expect the latter to start.

Like Positive Omen I think (well hope) we'll go with a front 3 of

COG UGWU DENNIS

I do think it will be a tough test though especially with the massive backing your players will have.

As Paul isn't able to make it down due to going to see the Manics and SoC ain't coming either Fish.... Fancy a few per match drinks in a neutral boozer?? (I do have mates btw, just making a big effort this season to meet some lads off here )

Think you'll surprise a few this year. Looking at the table predictions thread most seem to have you lower mid table. Personally think you'll challenge for PO's which is fine as long as you give us 6 points along the way :)

Who's your number 27 mate, and anyone in the pipeline this week to fill the number 9 shirt and lead the line for you guys??

Siriki Dembele

Anyone with that name is bound to be good right?

But he is 20? years old, and from the Nike Acadamy, and has probably been MOTM in every pre-season game so far!

The number 9 position? name a striker, and hes been rumoured! Main name doing the rounds was Tyler Walker, but not sure if that deal is dead now

We definitely need to get a number 9 in before Saturday. Slade must have one lined up having let Adi Yussuf leave last week. Only seen 2 pre-season friendlies, the home games between Blackburn and Wigan and although we only scored one very late penalty in the 2 games, we did play some decent football but Scott Vernon looked horribly exposed upfront.

As others have said Dembele is destined to become a crowd favourite but I'm just a bit worried that some beast of a League 2 defender won't take too kindly to being shown up by him and take him out.

Heart tells me a 2-1 win to us, head says 2-0 Chesterfield.

I think we'll do OK this season despite the continuing off-field (there was plenty ON it too last season) rubbish and I can see us winning and winning well on Saturday.

Enough time has passed now that despite our shambolic effort last season and all the crap happening off the pitch, i'm actually looking forward to going to a match again on Saturday.

We pretty much have a brand new team and on paper we've made some half decent signings (though i haven't actually seen any of them play yet 'cos pre-season games are a bit shit). I still don't trust in Caldwell's managerial abilities but here's hoping he proves me wrong.

Roll on 3 o'clock Saturday and that familiar sense of frustration and disappointment!

As we eek closer and closer to Saturday, with still no sign of a No9, I too edge closer to an easy Chesterfield win. We might be able to defend alright but if we're relying on Scott Vernon to get our goals, god help us.

350 tickets left out of the 2500 given to us (as at 09:00 today Wed 2nd Aug). I have a feeling in my water we are going to win 3-1, no real reason to think that, just a feeling. Let's hope for a trouble free day and a decent game, at least Jack Lester can't score against us again!

Should be a cracking opening day...not played you in years and really looking forward to it..whether with blind childish stupidity or actual optimism I'm not quite sure

Echo your sentiments about a trouble free game mate, think it's your lot's first trip to the Proact and a large police presence will be there to hopefully ensure the day goes trouble free (historically it doesn't with us pair!!)

There's gonna be a few away fans strolling around looking for a bit of bother and no doubt they will find locals willing to indulge them. Plenty of gesturing and hoping the police arrive before anyone actually does anything. All pretty sad really in 2017.

Think allocation is 2700 but a good following whichever. Hoping for a good sing-song and a Danny North winner.

That cheating little fucker. I remember him.
Hahaha were you the Chesterfield fan on TFF who didn't ever forget that? Even when Chesterfield were in L1, didn't you used to come into the L2 forum and complain about Danny North's dive?

There's a few players that stick out for getting a daft amount of stick at Saltergate whenever they came, he was definitely one of them. Some used to get a proper peppering, not the same any more the new ground has made us all soft

Ah football is back :woo:

Looking forward to this one, especially as Grimsby are bringing a decent following with them, always makes for a good atmosphere between us two!!

Reckon we'll line up in caldwells preferred 3-5-2 formation..

Lee
Wiseman - Evatt(c) - Hird
Barry - Sinnott-McCourt-Reed - Donohue
O'Grady - Dennis
3-1 Home win

Looking forward to this, our strong defensive line coupled with Chesterfields strong attack screams us getting peppered all game and eventually conceding.

However with Dembele and Jones we have two gems who will score goals this season, I just pray to god I don't see Berret and Summerfield.

If I had to choose a team...

Mckeown

Mills. Collins. Clarke. Dixon

Rose. Berrett

Dembele. Jones. Kelly

Cardwell/Vernon

If they weren't injured, McAllister would replace Berrett, Osborne would replace Kelly and Asante would be upfront.

Robbie Weir signs..... Brilliant news.

ODL you need to amend your starting XI ;)

You did anyway as I think you've got Dion and Louis Reed confused mate tbh.
