See lots of talk of this being the strongest this division has been for a while flying around but if Chesterfield are that good then you need better than Asante surely. I reckon we must have had around 5 or 6 strikers who were much better than him last time we were down here. Unless he's one of those that's great down here but no good in L2.

I don’t know how long ago it was since he was with you, but from what we’ve seen of him so far in his short time with us he is one of best strikers around at this level and could definitely do it in the division above. It’s not just his goals, his all round play is very good, and can create his own chances out of nothing which tends to be quite rare for forwards at this level

Like I said though, we’ve only really seen him for 6 months or so though and the ACL injury came when he was bang in form.

Strange one Billy Clarke as we had him here for a couple of months in 19/20 and he looked pretty good and easily League 2 standard so surprised he can’t even get picked up at this level.

I think he’s just come to us on trial a bit late. We are covered really in his position. No doubting his quality but just one of those things.

Fair enough, I'm probably doing him a disservice it seems. Didn't realise he'd done his ACL, harsh that. Hope he recovers. Strikers that have a little je nais se quois are a valuable commodity down here. Alan Connell in our first season down here was the type of player nobody had for the entirety our stay, would have loved to have seen him in our later teams under Hurst.

Though maybe viewing these players in league 2 compared to the good non-league players in non-league isn't a fair comparison?

I think the standard has got better across the board, but I dont think the best teams are better (or worse) than the best teams a few years ago. Then again the fact that Chesterfield fans rate Gunning and Asante says more about the utter dross they've been served up for the last few years. From what I've seen Gunning looks like your typical experienced ex league defender. Asante has just done what he always does- when he hits a purple patch hes a handful and as good as anyone. I dont think he's ever been a particularly consistent player for anyone though. Maybe Chester but he had to sit out every other game so he didn't break down, plus that was in the NL North.

I haven't seen anyone as good as Vardy or someone like Andre Gray for a long time. In fact the last really good forward pairing was probably Bogle and Amond. This year could be different a few teams look a bit more potent on paper.

For our part from the little bits I've seen Mullin looks as good as anyone we've had up front since Louis Moult. His overall game looks far better than we were led to believe.

Gunning certainly isn’t mentioned in the same breath as Asante amongst our fan base. Gunning is just like EnglishRed has said, a typical old school experienced defender, who’s leadership qualities are the biggest attributes he brings to our side. When Hollis is fit, he starts over Gunning for me so he’s not even a guaranteed starter.

Perhaps Asante has had a set back and won't be back this side of Christmas - leaving us with Rowe, Payne and Tyson? (a front 3 that won't fire us to the title).

I'm guessing of course, but there has to be some reason for us pushing the boat out (supposedly) for Tshimanga - the Trust don't come across as reckless owners that would be 'spooked' by other clubs spending.

This might all be nonsense anyway - but why is it about competing financially?

Perhaps the Trust have reviewed the budget and identified extra funds that can be used to pull in a player like Tshimanga?
