Could see Brown wanting Bogle but wages will be an issue

Isn’t Bogle terrible now?

Scored 20 odd for us before Christmas in lge 2, then for some reason signed (money) for relegation bound Wigan in the championship final day in Jan. Obviously money talks, but a case of moving up the league's too quickly and to the wrong club, rumoured Leeds came in at the very last minute and that might have been a good move at the time if he ever was championship quality.

Since the he's moved around championship and lge 1 and not done a lot, I'd be surprised if he wasn't still a good striker at this level and dropping down may do him some good, but I'd be shocked if we could afford his wages unless Donny paid most of them.

Doncaster fans says he is on big money and has downed tools there turning down a few moves .Seems like an expensive risk for someone at this level

Done nothing at all since leaving Grimsby, albeit with bit part roles at a much higher level. Occasionally dropping back down can get a striker going again, but quite rare that they find form again at any level after such a long time without performing.

Yeah I wouldn’t want him at all but it’s definitely a brown type player

You wouldn’t want a player who has a 1 in 2 record at this level and the one above? Who has only played League 1 and Championship since?

I'm not sure Bogle's heart is in it anymore, he should have been far better than he's been since leaving Grimsby. He's also made of glass now, I think his final season at Grimsby is still his highest appearance season since leaving and that was only half a season!

I wouldn’t want him at Notts, he’s the kind of player who looks far, far more likely to be an expensive flop than a success.

Call it bias but I think the one club he’d really succeed at would be with us, his heart definitely isn’t in it but even a half arsed Omar Bogle would be better than any other striker in this division.

There are plenty of strikers with a better record than Bogle had in this division, and that’s now rather than five/six years ago.

I'm inclined to agree with the non-Town fans here. Bogle is a huge risk, other than his spell at Pompey (was well liked there by all accounts) he's done bugger all since he left us four and a half years ago. All signs point to his heart not being in it anymore. However, I doubt Hurst would sign him if he didn't think he could get a tune out of him...that's the straw I'm clutching to as I'm not keen on this signing at all.

To be fair Bogle in this division last time was very good but not to wow levels but it was when in League 2 that his game suddenly reached that next level where he was pretty sensational most weeks.

Where he messed up in my opinion was demanding to leave Wigan after their relegation as he seemed to have done ok there and scored a few good goals and then you look at that next season that Wigan had in League 1 scoring goals for fun and perhaps if he’d stayed there that could’ve been him banging a load of those goals in at a promotion winning side instead of him suddenly flopping everywhere he’s been since.

The hope that I would have is that he knows that he is loved here and so he would be playing with no pressure of fans getting on his back and maybe that would bring out the best in him?

Guess we’ll have to wait and see as it might not be us anyway.

He had one season here and went up a level the season after, he was absolutely unplayable in League 2 for us. There are few in this league who have played at the level he has and he’s only 28.

Ryan Taylor for example is 33 years old, got a pretty poor record in League 1 yet looks very decent for us. Amond scored for fun yet never made it past League 2, Connell similar before him.

Even McAtee (granted a number 10) looks levels above anybody yet didn’t really make it for Scunthorpe.

A striker with recent Championship experience is a level ahead of the obvious names down here at the minute and I think the gap has actually grown since we’ve last been here.

Yeah exactly. Unnecessarily kicked his toys out the pram to stay in the Championship when he could have been up top with the likes of Griggs, Power and Powell smashing goals in in League One. Would have genuinely been the best place for him.

Yeah, I won't be losing any sleep if it's not us. One thing that worries me is that Hurst referred to strikers that he's on the fence about. Hopefully, he isn't about to take a gamble on a bad egg.

We may well find out, but you would be mad to want Bogle over a Mullin, Wootton, Quigley, Cheek, Rodrigues, Tshimanga etc. at the minute.

Yeah I wouldn't take Bogle over some of those names right now, especially with the amount of wages he is likely to be on.

Let's be honest the reason he hasn't left Donny this summer and why he has not dropped down sooner is because of the money he is making doing nothing.

I would be happy for him to come back seen as we need a goalscorer but only if Donny are paying most of his wages. I think he would do well at this level, especially if Hurst is his manger, but it's deffo a risk but it's not like there is loads of strikers available right now is it? Also perhaps him coming back here would reignite his career, it's two levels below where he is now, he should be more than good enough.

Yes but we aren't gonna be spunking the kind of wages we'd need to on Mullin, Quigley, Tshimanga. Don't have your super computer system and Cheek won't come up here. Same for Akinde too, who would be my #1 target.

Oh it would be worth a risk on loan if Doncaster are paying the vast majority of his wages, it was more the idea that Bogle could wander about and be the best player in the league that I was objecting to haha.

Really you want to be finding the next Bogle, though, as much as that’s easier said than done.

It was Hurst at Scunthorpe who bombed Wootton out and sold him to us, I think, as it happens.

Someone just made a really good post on The Fishy that addresses this to some extent, I've bolded the bit I'm referring to...

I think there are some reasonable arguments that have been made against Bogle, but I'm not sure they stack up under scrutiny. Certainly, if given the choice between a 28 year old Bogle (he's not 29 by the way) and the up and coming Bogle / Hearn of the next generation, then I'd probably be inclined to choose the latter, potentially hungrier option. If we were ever to have Bogle back on a permanent basis at some point in the future, then the chance of any future resale value would be slim at best.

But that assumes there's some kind of binary option at play. In my opinion, if 'the next Bogle' was out there, had been identified and was available within our means then we've had already done it by now. Hurst has a good track record of brining players up from the regional leagues, the trouble being at this moment in time they've hardly played in the last couple of years due to Covid. Both Bogle and Hearn arrived having been consistently prolific in the Conference North over the course of the previous year or two - there just isn't the data from that level to go and easily find a player of a similar ilk.

I'd distance this from the usual Podge-fest that comes up every transfer window (and to a lesser degree, the usual Bogle-fest). This is different. Here are the facts:
  • Our squad is calling out for a number 9; someone physical and direct who can score goals at this level
  • In terms of playing style and record at this level, the level below and the level above, Bogle 100% ticks that box
  • Hurst has said publicly, that having seemingly exhausted our options during the window, that we would be looking at players made available for loan after it has ended. box
  • He also said that this is precisely the scenario under which he brought Conor Townsend back to the club in 2015
  • Bogle is available and is currently playing for a club 50 miles down the M180
  • Realistically, he can only sign for a club in this division due to the closing of the transfer window, and most of our rivals already appear to have done their business up top

The whole thing just makes a lot of sense on a number of levels. I actually think the whole thing would be given a lot more credence if perhaps Bogle had achieved what he did for us at another club - those endless "let's get player X back at BP" posts can get a bit boring over time, but this one does seem genuinely different in terms of the way the stars at least appear to have aligned.

That said, there could of course be reasons why this might be a complete non-starter. Perhaps Omar's given up on football. Perhaps he can't handle a return to non-league, or can't face the idea of a full-circle return to Blundell Park as it would just rubber stamp the fact that he's failed in his time since leaving. All of those things would be understandable, but I can understand why it's a topic of conversation.

Irrespective of current form (albeit at a much higher level than this) I'd welcome the lad back with open arms. If, and I'm making assumptions here, he's lost his mojo and needs a spark to reignite the fire, where better to do it at this moment in time than Blundell Park, and who better to do it with than the man under whom he played the best football of his life in Paul Hurst?
Not sure I full agree that the data isn't out there, the level immediately below has played at least some football over the past few years, however our owners have said that if the correct target can be identified then the funds are there. We just aren't going to be chucking silly amounts at it like Wrexham and Stockport.

Yeah, that is true and a good point, we probably picked up the last one available in Lewis Knight mid-way through last season (which hasn’t worked out at all yet really).

And yet none of the names you’ve mentioned have played at the level Bogle has recently.

Bogle is currently an attitude thing which is the risk, the ability is absolutely unquestionable IMO.

We’re all wasting breath though, I just cannot see it happening

But Scunthorpe were terrible last season and still look favourites for the drop this - only Holloway's destroy and exit saved them; at a different League 2 club McAtee would be progressing at that level and SUFC did try and keep him. Ironically, there was one decision that Holloway made that might have relegated us and kept Scunthorpe up - sending Loft packing after a trial saying he was rubbish and then they signed him. Holloway then chucked 2 and 3 year contracts around like confetti for a pile of shite. If Hurst had Loft in the squad in the second half of last season he might have got the goals in all those drawn games to make the difference.
