Has anyone here ever done proper voluntary work before? If so what was it like?

I am thinking of doing some kind of it as I just currently have a part time job but I need to do something more productive in my free time until I can get full time work as I do not want to get depressed and lonely, maybe I will make new friends as well hopefully.

So any opinions?

It really depends what your interests are, Carvs. If you like football, why not be a volunteer helper with a local youth club. If you feel a particular affinity for elderly people, join Help The Aged. That sort of thing. Whatever you decide to do though, be aware that participation may involve security and / or Criminal Records Bureau checks. I'm not suggesting you're a criminal, by the way, but you need to be aware that volunteer groups are very rigorous (rightly so) in vetting volunteer applicants.

I was once a volunteer worker with an LGBT support group, helping young people deal with their sexuality issues. It was a very rewarding thing to do and yes, I made a lot of friends, many of whom I'm still in touch with.

Respect to you for feeling a desire to help others. I wish you luck.

Do you know of a well known website where I can find these volunteer jobs or any other means of finding them?

I do a day a week at a local charity TWIGS. They help people with mental health issues via gardening.

Perhaps you could try checking out your local library or Citizens Advice Bureau.

We left our leaflets and posted them on notice boards there (and at other places). Out of all the places we left them at, we found that most of the people who contacted us said that was where they first found us.

Certainly, the local library and also the Town Hall would have a list of all volunteer services for you to peruse.

I did a year's voluntary work at the CAB and it was that, not my degree, that was instrumental in my getting my first professional job.

The voluntary work I did at CAB helped me to tick most of the boxes on the person spec for the job I applied for.
