eh, whatever. Do people genuinely think this is brilliant? It's good and held my interest long enough to see it through but the pay off wasn't jaw-dropping nor particularly clever. I enjoyed the acting and that was about it.
No, same. I enjoyed it, but in the end I think it wasn't a lot more than a well made bit of ephemera.
Its Big Idea stuff is a bit of a Rorschach Test - allude to a bunch of interesting stuff about free will and consciousness and so on, but in a vague sort of a way so as to never have anything much to say about them. Just dangle it all out there and let the think piece penners go to work.
The twisty reveal was as I had feared also, a well constructed bit of narrative machinery, but to what end? It didn't have any particular thematic resonance or whatevs.
Also probably a personal cavil: I would have liked it if they could've found a way to employ a bit more Western lore/mythos in some sort of meaningful manner. We had the white/black hat stuff, and if you squinted hard enough you could perhaps have seen that scene on the beach as a sarcy riff on manifest destiny or summat, but to summon all the accumulated baggage of the Western and then only use it for dress-up was a missed opportunity.
