The classics seem to be leading the way here.

CHILE 1962 (vs West Germany 1974)

57a4lqq.jpg

The official World Cup poster of the 1962 Chile World Cup was designed by one Gabarino Ponce, who honestly was called Gabarino Ponce.

Ponce was an astute man who believed not only in the round Earth theory but also in there being loads of islands off the west coast of the Americas and out toward South Africa, and also the moon being made of giant football.

WEST GERMANY 1974 (vs Chile 1962)

Horst Schäfer came up with the World Cup poster for the 1974 West Germany World Cup. As anyone with an O-level in German or Googling will tell you, Horst Schäfer translates as Bird Nest Shepherd.

A talented painter, Schäfer was also clearly a simpleton with limited understanding of human anatomy.

ARGENTINA 1978 (vs Sweden 1958)

h5A3GMZ.jpg

The Argentina 1978 World Cup poster sees a huge-handed Bob Carolgees lookalike sticking out his purple tongue as his mate gives him a lovely hug.

Said to be designed by an agency that also did propaganda work for the Argentine dictatorship of the time, the 1978 Argentina World Cup poster is believed to be the only World Cup poster ever to pay tribute to Nottingham Forest great Robert Rosario.

SWEDEN 1958 (vs Argentina 1978)

X7o12Kg.jpg

Sweden's only entry in the World Cup Poster World Cup is their poster from the 1958 World Cup.

Taking inspiration from the poster for Hitchcock's Vertigo which was released around the same time, it leaves the viewer asking the eternal question: 'is that Luis van Gaal looking astonished or is it just the dude's collar?'

WEST GERMANY 1974 (vs Chile 1962)

Damn, I didn't remember this shit one. Wasn't very popular at School for us boys back then (I was 11), but we all liked our mascots, Tip&Tap :D

So for me it's the Chile one that wins this Knockout round (is this our first loss against Chile in World Cup or Competition Football...ah, only poster...Huge relief ;) )

Horst Schäfer came up with the World Cup poster for the 1974 West Germany World Cup.

I only know Hans Schäfer, member of the WC Winner Team of 1954 (who sadly passed away a few weeks ago at age 90. So only Horst Eckel still alive of both Teams)

As anyone with an O-level in German or Googling will tell you, Horst Schäfer translates as Bird Nest Shepherd.

:D

((Flieger)Horst is also used in German as a description of an airbase for the Luftwaffe, just for Information ;) )

btw: Great idea, Stagat

SPAIN 1982 (vs Italia 90)

V6cci6q.jpg

Joan Miró painted the World Cup poster for the 1982 Spain World Cup. A Catalan, Miró might conceivably last year have voted for independence from the very country he made a World Cup poster for.

Unfortunately we can only guess if he would have or not, because he died in 1983. His demise makes him our first World Cup poster painter to have a post-World Cup poster World Cup post mortem.

ITALIA 90 (vs Spain 1982)

lHRKGWL.jpg

The World Cup poster for the Italia 90 World Cup is the first World Cup poster to ever marry a monochrome photo negative with Sega Master System graphics.

It was knocked up by Alberto Burri, on his lunch break. He confessed on his death bed in 1995 to doing a tiny centre circle and no 'Ds' on the penalty boxes "for a grin".

I hated the Spain 82 poster back then (maybe because I am a philistine (or whatever you say to someone who knows fuck all about modern arts), so I vote for the Italian one (only time I vote for Italian Football where there's no Gigi Buffon in it :D )

btw: I liked your post about Spain '82 nonetheless because of your description (not because I like the miro poster ;) )

URUGUAY 1930 (vs South Africa 2010)

wb9STAF.jpg

The very first World Cup poster is from the very first World Cup ever held, which was the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay.

The design was unexpected at the time and still shocks today; a chronic hemorrhoid sufferer catching the ball between both feet to prevent it going out for a corner.

SOUTH AFRICA 2010 (vs Uruguay 1930)

Wtj2DgM.jpg

The World Cup poster for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa gave post-colonial Africa a chance to remind those still in their outposts who first colonised the world.

Finding the right model was tricky but they eventually found somone with a head and neck almost like the shape of the great continent.

A bit of green, yellow and red facepaint later and a yellow curtain to stand in front of and a fishing rod to dangle a footy off and the South Africa World Cup poster was ready to come straight outta Africa.

RUSSIA 2018 (vs Mexico 1986)

t8fZ4CZ.jpg

The only World Cup Poster World Cup poster to represent a World Cup post World Cup Poster World Cup is the poster for the 2018 Russia World Cup.

It features the legendary Lev Yashin, who enjoyed twin nicknames; the Black Spider, on account of once being a villain in a 1976 Batman comic, and the Black Panther, on account of being a black nationalist and socialist in the US from 1966 to 1982, and also being on the run for multiple murders in the UK before getting caught in 1975 in Rainworth of all places.

MEXICO 1986 (vs Russia 2018)

pLn3EkW.jpg

The 1986 Mexico World Cup poster is the perfect amalgamation of cultural high-water marks.

The white-and-black, hexagon-and-pentagon football. The Bruce Forsyth shadow (good game good game). THAT FONT! And of course the use of azteca imagery which has subliminally yet obviously led directly to the Soccer AM boffins enriching our lives saying stuff like "he 'as tekkers". All it needs is a Kasabian logo and we could call this whole thing off tbh.
