What's the consensus now then?

I don't follow Spanish football closely enough to know how folk have really rated him from when he started and up 'til now. Seem to remember thinking he got chucked in prematurely (I thought at the time) and that he stood a fair chance of doing one of them legacy-ruining great player / rubbish manager stints.

But obvs not in hindsight.

Maybe I missed it but is he being bigged up the same way Guardiola was at Barca? Has he got lucky with the players he inherited or is he just actually really good? Or both?

See him doing well elsewhere eventually? Too early to say?

He's clearly a manager who has the respect, understanding, and confidence of the Real players and fans. Which isn't something that can be said of many Real managers down the years. Jose and Rafa certainly didn't seem to have that connection.

One example of this > here argues < that, In previous years and under previous managers, Ronaldo has been undroppable. So keen to play every single game in order to score as many goals over the season, to secure golden boots and break goal scoring records. That's left him knackered. This season Zidane managed to do what no other manager has and convinced Ronaldo to rest, to be rotated in and out, coming in for the most important games. So instead of flogging himself and scoring 50-60 goals, he's 'only' scored 41 this season. But instead of limping to the season's finish line, he's been fresh.

Whereas If Rafa sat down with Ronadlo and tried to suggest a rotation policy, perhaps it would'nt have gone down well?! Zidane has the gravitas and people skills to get those egos working to his ideas.

So far he is doing a stellar job with the amazing talent he has at his disposal.its laughable that there was talk of Perez sacking him a few months back, though with that fool anything is possible.

Still think as a player he was vastly underrated. In the top three I've seen in my lifetime that's for sure.

Normally as players get older, they start playing further backwards. Ronaldo, in my opinion has turned into not so much a poacher, but someone who scores the majority of his goals around the 6 yard box. If it was Zidane that proposed that change, then it's a masterstroke on his part as I think in this role he still has another 3 years banging them in at a world class level.
