Burnley hosts Manchester United with both sides looking for a win on the sixth matchday of the Premier League campaign.

Newly-promoted Burnley are adjusting to life back in the Premier League and went into the September 2023 international break as statistically the worst team in the division. Having earned automatic promotion by winning last season’s EFL Championship in record fashion, Vincent Kompany has overseen the signing of 15 new players over the summer as they look to return to their glory days as an established top-flight club.

The Clarets have so far endured a tough return to the Premier League as they got the harshest of welcomes when they hosted Manchester City on opening day and lost 3-0. Burnley had a two-week window to prepare for the next match after their Gameweek 2 fixture was postponed, however, they came up short again with a 3-1 defeat to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

Although there was some joy in the last-gasp win at Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup, Vincent Kompany’s men could not build on the result and were duly spanked 5-2 by Tottenham Hotspur – courtesy of a Son Heung-Min hat-trick – just before the international break.

After losing only once at home throughout last season, Burnley have had the worst possible start by losing their first three matches which were all at Turf Moor. This sees them sitting at the bottom of the table behind Luton Town on goal difference.

Therefore, fears of a relegation battle are now well and truly alive and they must begin to secure the points that lift them off the basement.

Manchester United have had a mixed start to their own campaign as they navigate a tumultuous period on and off the pitch.

Raphael Varane’s goal made the difference on a night they were lucky to win against Wolves but they failed to pass the season’s first test against fellow top four contenders in Tottenham Hotspur by losing 2-0 in London. United proved they only respond to adversity when they roared from an early two-goal deficit to defeat 10-man Nottingham Forest 3-2, but all that good work was cruelly undone in a keenly-contested 3-1 loss to Arsenal after they took an undeserved lead and saw a point evaporate in the final five minutes of the 11 minutes added to full-time.

The inconsistency of Erik ten Hag’s team is obvious in their record of two wins and two defeats from the opening four games. Both losses were away to top opposition and something has got to give when a poor away side visits a poor home side.

Hence, the Red Devils will hope the inferior quality of opposition counts in their favour as they beat Burnley en route to winning the EFL Cup last season to make it four wins out of their last five meetings in all competitions, yet their last Premier League visit to Turf Moor ended in a frustrating 1-1 draw.

Match tickets

This match is set to take place on Saturday, 23rd September and kicks off at 8 PM UK time. Lancashire’s finest will be in action at the 21,944-capacity Turf Moor Stadium and you can expect a raucous atmosphere regardless of the home side’s fortunes.

Getting Burnley vs Manchester United tickets for the game have been made available on each club’s websites.

but it may yet be difficult to get Burnley tickets simply because a prestigious club like Manchester United are coming to town and they are itching for that first home win back in the top division.

United supporters may then have to fend for their away tickets on a ticket reselling site.

Team news

The Clarets could still be without Hjalmar Ekdal, Michael Obafemi, Darko Churlinov and Mike Tresor for this game with the latter trio yet to make their debut for the club.

It is now of utmost importance that Kompany has a fit and healthy squad as the young side comes to terms with the battle for survival.

Man United have the likes of Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Tyrell Malacia, Antony, Amad Diallo and Tom Heaton all ruled out through injury or suspension. They would nevertheless be hoping to have welcomed back Varane, Sofyan Amrabat, Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount by the time this fixture comes up.

Line-ups

The Burnley manager will be looking for improved performances from his side and the continuity of a preferred team could help build the required levels they need to get results. South African striker Lyle Foster is their top scorer with two goals so far and he gives the team the ability to create enabling patterns around him.

Indeed, Anass Zaroury’s return from suspension also bodes well for their attacking fortunes in the coming weeks.

Burnley: Trafford; Al-Dakhil, O’Shea, Beyer, Roberts; Berge, Cullen; Koleosho, Gudmundsson, Foster; Amdouni

Despite the dearth of forward options for Ten Hag, Marcus Rashford remains their marksman and he will look to combine with new striker Rasmus Hojlund in the coming weeks.

Rashford is a particular threat to the hosts as he opened his individual account with a fine goal at Arsenal and netted against Burnley in the EFL Cup last season. The 25-year-old also assisted in both games the last time the Clarets were in the Premier League.

Man United: Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Martinez, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial

Prediction

Burnley have averaged more than four goals per game in the Premier League and have found the net only three times at the time of writing. They have so far been inventive and brave on the ball but very naive off it as they struggle with the quality of opponents they meet weekly.

Man Utd can blow hot or cold but after meeting Brighton and Bayern Munich, they will visit Turf Moor with the intention of grabbing their first away win in the league. The supreme talent in Ten Hag’s team alongside Burnley’s home woes should see them receiving the maximum points at the expense of a Man City legend.
