Beyond Predictions: The Underdog Teams Poised to Surprise at Euro 2024

The UEFA EURO Championship is one of the most well-loved championships in soccer, and every four years, only the best of the best get to partake in this legendary championship. The EURO Championship is known for always bringing about some pretty surprising results. When Italy won the Championship in 2020, it was a largely unsuspected win with most fans hoping that favorites Portugal would take the win again.  

Qualifying for the EURO Championship has already happened, and the teams have been set into their groups. However, as with every EURO Championship before, it’s very difficult to imagine who will come up on top right now. With the EURO Championship, it’s almost always too early to call it and one literally has to watch until the end to determine the winner. 

This year’s cup is no different. Even the underdogs are looking pretty strong, and it’s proving to make for some really exciting soccer. There’s a good chance that the 2024 Championship could prove to be one of the most exciting events in recent football history. So, here are some of the favorite underdogs for next year’s Championship and what makes them well worth watching. 

Slovakia

Slovakia is widely regarded as one of the most promising underdog teams in the 2024 EURO Championship so far. They have some pretty good experienced players like Milan Škriniar, who has been playing center-back for Paris Saint Germain this last year and is a favorite from Inter Milan, two very competitive teams. They also sport a super-charged Stanislav Lobotka who has been playing center midfielder for SSC Napoli since 2020 and cut his teeth in the European league.

So far, they have already managed to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina, proving that they have what it takes to make a real impact in next year’s Championship. While they are unfortunately in the same group as Portugal, meaning they’ll be going up against some pretty serious opponents, proving that they have what it takes to win in the playoffs will be a big deciding factor for their chances at success throughout the rest of the Championship. 

Analysts from many new betting sites for 2023 are currently predicting that they have a good chance of rallying up some pretty good games and making it to this group’s second place spot, which is where they’re sitting at the time of writing. Hopefully, things will go according to plan for Slovakia, as everyone loves seeing an underdog come up on top. Only time will tell, but it’s best to keep an eye out for these guys. Currently odds-on at around 1/4 to qualify, it looks pretty certain that Slovakia will make it to the next stage. However, to win outright, their odds are around 200/1, so don’t get your hopes up for a victory! 

Scotland

While Scotland isn’t generally regarded as being one of the strongest teams in the championship, Spain’s recent 1-0 win over Norway allowed them to qualify. At the moment, the top two sides in the group both have 15 points. 

Despite Scotland not having the strongest team, experts are placing their odds at 9/1 as the winners of the Group A category. That essentially means that there’s a 10% chance of them winning, which isn’t particularly high – but it is still a chance. Technically speaking, Scotland did win the European Championship all the way back in 1982, so it’s not as if they’re totally incapable of achieving greatness against bad odds. 

While it’s no guarantee of their success in the current championship, these underdogs could be well worth paying attention to. 

Turkey

By beating Latvia in a stunning 4-0 victory, Turkey managed to secure their ticket to the Euro 2024 championship. While the Turkish team weren’t really expected to do incredibly well during the qualifiers, they managed to surprise and glided into the championship. 

It’s important to remember that Turkey won the championship back in 1999-2000, so even though they’re an underdog team, they could really pull out all the stops and do something quite unexpected. 

While the odds of them winning next year are stacked largely against them at 80/1, when compared to France’s 4/1 prediction, they could still prove to be an exciting team to watch in the championship.
