#1 - A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin - 88 points, 5 lists

13496.jpg

I didn't think an entry could win this feature by being only on 5 lists. The explanation is that on 4 of those 5 lists, GoT finished either top, runner-up or third in the ranking.
I won't be researching or reviewing this as I'm going to read this real soon. You may converse with the appropriate spoilers.

Thanks for participating. See you in 5 years.

Thanks for running this again, I didn't vote this time as I hadn't been reading as much but I think I will next time. I've read a couple of books I found on this list already and my next two books will be from this list as well. (Wool and the Robert Enke book.)

I found the books in the early part of the list more interesting but that's to be expected as everyone knows the big hitters.

Thanks for taking the time out to do this, MM. Been interesting throughout.

One of my initial fears following the transfer of TFF to 1FF was that we were never going to find out how the list would have ended.

See you in five years. ;)

Yeah, good work MM. Didn't send a list in but followed this all the way.

Yeah, well done mm. Some of your reviews were great. I kind of lost interest as it got towards the end but the start of it was ace. Looking forward to the next one when you'll hopefully allow the inclusion of graphic novels/comics. :tomf:

Why did people lose interest towards the end? I don't get it.

I can only speak for myself, but I lost interest a little towards the end because they were mainly books I don't care about. Nothing to do with the feature itself, which was excellently run. I look forward to next year's edition ;)

I found the early bit more interesting as well. Mainly because you could predict what books were going to come out near the top. The most interesting bit for me was seeing books that I was only slightly aware of or hadn't heard of at all come out as now they can be added to the ever growing to-read list.

The Hobbit was the first real book I can remember reading. My granddad gave me a copy of it on either my 7th or 8th birthday and it really sparked an interest in reading from there so it will always hold a special place for me. I don't know how many times I've read it but it is a lot.

Cheers for doing this again MM. Don't be disheartened, I know that everyone on here interested in the results...even if some dodgy books came out top :box:

That's the thing right there. Top books are the ones that people put top of their lists (or appeared on a lot of lists). Why aren't people commenting on GoT if they classed it as the best book they've ever read.
I'll do a full recap next week on what I liked/disliked while running this feature.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people don't review the books they have voted for. I tried to do it to most of mine. Perhaps because these books are more well known, they feel that a review isn't needed? I don't know.

Yeah, all of the above. Don't like Tolkien, Harry Potter or George R R Martin and some of the people that voted for them didn't seem to make much of an effort to write about their choices.

Absolutely nothing to do with your effort or anything.

To be fair there were quite a few posts about the ultimate HP list but the debate was not insightful at all (coz, y'know, it's about some wise ass wizkid who looks stoopid) but I'm surprised that the GRRM fans didn't confirm that the Song of Ice and Fire series were brill (and they do look quite good reviewing them).

Basically next time this comes around, if you're not going to back up your top choice with why that particular book topped your list don't bother sending me a list!

Thanks for running this again, MM. As others have stated above, I enjoyed reading the comments on the earlier parts of the list more, just because it's an insight into books that aren't as well known. I tried to write a bit about most of the books that I nominated, especially the ones that only I voted for, but I felt less need to for the likes of LOTR or 1984 because I assume everyone knows about them already.

MM, I kept up to date with this thread even though I wasn't a member. Good work.

Bit disappointed with all the crap/average books doing well (HP, GOT etc) but I'm not surprised.

I hope you run this again some time.

Very belated, but cheers for running this MM. Glad to see GOT finishing in the top spot... but it's not even the best ASOIAF book!

Tbf would you want to hear from someone whose favourite book is a Harry Potter?

A contribution would have been welcome! This really felt like the top 10 was just a given. At least sell the damn things to me, do something!

No worries, Oaf, I know you went all California on my ass!

One of the modmins can unpin this now. It deserves to die a slow and painful death due to the fuckers not keeping up with it. RIP great thread.
