We have done (League games)
5 wins on bounce
4 draws on bounce and
3 defeats on bounce

as well as an eleven game winless run and an

eight game run without defeat.

If we win this we will have gone about it in a very strange way, Has anyone else had a run of 5 wins in the same season as they suffered 5 defeats on the trot as we did in November?
Yes we lost 6 on the trot earlier in the season, then won 5 on the trot for the first time in 15 years.

Our 5 on the trot is the first time in 11 years since the Micky Adams days... not sure when we last won 6! Probably the glorious 1954 side or something!

I dont know for definite but we may have won 6 or 7 in a row in the 96/97 season when we nearly got to the Premier league.

Last time we won 6 we ended up winning 10 which is our biggest run in our history, didn’t do us much good think we ended mid table. A typical lower league club achievement.

Quick question on the rules on this. If we remain tied does it come down to closest to 0 goal difference or do we share it? I think in theory we could clinch this in 2 games time maybe sooner depending on games in hand above.

It can come down to which game finishes first on the day two “clinch” it, otherwise it’s shared. The latter is the epitome of mediocrity so obviously has to be a possible outcome.

It would be a laugh if it had happened today where snow would have denied Vale the trophy by finishing later than other teams

I think we are playing too consistently to win this and will stay in the theoretical play off chase too long.

Everyone down to Crawley is now safe. Barrow and above can still make the playoffs though Mansfield with their extra games played, are only able to make the playoffs on goal difference. They're only five points from guaranteed safety so I think they'll be winning this trophy... might be winning it on Tuesday in fact.

OK decided to see if I can work it out... Mansfield not actually playing on Tuesday but if they fail to win on Saturday then they can no longer go up, or that might be sorted out on Tuesday if both Exeter and Newport win. Failing all that then Salford, Carlisle and Bradford all play too and their results could also put the playoffs out of Mansfield's reach. Basically it's very unlikely that Mansfield will still be mathematically capable of promotion this time next week. Scunthorpe, Walsall and Barrow could also all be ruled out but not quite as likely.

The only thing that could happen that affects the relegation battle on Tuesday is Walsall could move within two points of guaranteed safety, if they do that though then they'll still probably be mathematically able to get promoted.

At this point I couldn't be bothered doing any further working out, but have come to the conclusion that it's between Mansfield and Walsall, with Mansfield in pole position and could be decided on Saturday.

Don’t think it can be won this Saturday, but a defeat for both Grimsby and Southend and a win for Mansfield practically gives the trophy to Mansfield

no it won't - we are going to beat Orient and our GD is nearer to zero than yours - it's ours to lose now

*edit - if Walsall draw with Col U and the bottom 2 lose do they not win it on Saturday if FGR and Newport draw or win their games?

If you beat Orient then you’ll still be able to get into the play offs. You’ve played a game less and therefore aren’t in the running at the moment.

Selling Manny Oyeleke to The Spirites has given us a great chance of picking up this coveted crown. Great work by Clarke.

And Mansfield don’t even need those teams to win for them to be out of reach. Mansfield are in the box seat for this as there are less results needed for them to reach safety.

If we lose we would be 13 potentially off the play offs with 4 to go and Mathematically safe.

by the way - it feels nice to be able to argue that we might actually win an imaginary cup rather than talk about a relegation battle....

The winners of this are the first team who can't be promoted or relegated. As a different take. I wonder who will be the last team that can go up or down?

Have we already past that point?

I think all clubs between 16th and 20th are still mathematically able to get in the play-offs or be relegated. Maybe?

I doubt we will win our last 5 games but the max we can get if we did was 68 which wouldn't be enough to make the play offs. I dont know how we are going to play in these final 5 games we might continue to perform well and finish around 10th or we could play like were on the beach with nothing to play for and barely pick a point up and finish 19th. It will probably be somewhere in between that and we end up about 14th with 60 points.

From listening to Clarke he does seem to have a born winner attitude. I.e. he’d always play to win, can’t imagine how he would react if we get one of those real end of season can’t be arsed efforts like at Cambridge, Home to Walsall, Swindon’s or the pathetic effort at Barnet to see Lincoln relegated which caused Grew to blow.

If we make changes it should only be the dead rubbers for both sides such as Bradford and likely Mansfield. Grimsby, Barrow and Carlisle if still in the various battles from play offs or relegations we should go at full pelt to keep integrity.

I was chuffed for example Burton won when we lost 5-0 at home to Walsall so it didn’t send them up as that would have been a disgrace with the effort we put in.

Barring a frankly miraculous set of results one or more of the following sides will have their hands on the Cup on Tuesday:

Scunthorpe
Walsall
Mansfield
Oldham
Harrogate
Stevenage
Port Vale

The results required for the Cup not to be awarded (taking into account future fixture gymnastics):

Bolton must beat Carlisle
Forest Green must beat Exeter
Grimsby must beat Morecambe
Cambridge must beat Orient
Crawley must beat Newport
Walsall must beat Salford

Much more likely is a four or five team tie. Here is what each of the contenders require for immortality:

Scunthorpe must beat Mansfield. Grimsby must lose. Southend must not win.

Walsall must not lose to Salford. Grimsby must lose. Southend must not win.

Mansfield must not lose to Scunthorpe. Grimsby must lose. Southend must not win.

If Oldham lose to or draw with Harrogate, then Grimsby must not win. If Oldham beat Harrogate, then a point for both Orient & Carlisle or Exeter & Newport OR a win for any of those sides or Salford will do.

If Harrogate lose to or draw with Oldham, then a point for both Orient & Carlisle or Exeter & Newport OR a win for any of those sides or Salford will do. If Harrogate beat Oldham, then a win for any one of Exeter, Newport, Orient or Carlisle will do.

If Stevenage lose to or draw with Cheltenham, then a point for both Orient & Carlisle or Exeter & Newport OR a win for any of those sides or Salford will do. If Stevenage beat Cheltenham, then a win for any one of Exeter, Newport, Orient or Carlisle will do.

Port Vale must not win against Barrow. If Port Vale draw with Barrow then either Exeter & Newport or Orient & Carlisle must win. If Port Vale lose to Barrow then a win for any of Newport, Exeter, Orient, Carlisle or Salford will do.

Yeah I think it’s going to be shared, though it may come down to which team’s game finishes first. I’ll stick on my FlashScore alerts for all games on Tuesday so we can figure out which result comes in first in the event of a tie.

Oldham seem to be the furthest from both ends so I think it’s probable they’ll at least share it on Tuesday.
