Any team who have had a decent season but not got promoted and then build on it instead of selling everything that moves (see Swindon 2 years ago) , must have a great chance the following season.

Our Boxing Day game looking tasty!

Agreed. Oakey may think otherwise but Luton look like genuine title contenders and personally I think they'll make the top 3. I have my doubts on their manager as he's still relatively young and therefore inexperienced , but their squad should be good enough to go up. But, to be fair to Oakey and his fellow Hatters, this is certainly not the first time they're everybody's favs for promotion so the fans scepticism is somewhat justified.

I think that Luton have got the best team on paper but would have Coventry and Mansfield ahead of them still when you factor in the managers.

Well we managed to get Grant back on a season loan so that top half finish now looking like a play off spot. Another quality defender and a CF and we will be looking decent.

Grant is the kind of player that can turn a solid, organised team into one capable of challenging, feeling pretty confident now.

I think the majority of posters need to revise their current placing for us.

I shall do mine at the start of August.

Luton and Cov would be my top two currently. Expect Chesterfield, Mansfield, Exeter to have good seasons, Lincoln could get themselves into the play offs.

Not predicted the table yet but just want it on record that I was always a Lincoln believer.

That's my stab at it, Morecambe's financial woes catch up with them and Crawley struggle as their continue there recent downward spiral since making League One.

All 4 relegated teams have decent seasons but Luton and Mansfield's heavy spending see them promoted along with a rare success for a shrewd Coventry outfit. Lincoln have a decent first season and Notts County continue to improve under Nolan. Forest Green Rovers have a steady debut season and consolidate.

One of the relegated teams almost always struggles, Vale being my bet for that this year.

Long as we sign a half decent left back I expect us to do well. Comparing the last side we had that struggled at this level (Glovers awful 2008-09 side) this side is far better, most of that side ended up in the Irish, Lower Scottish or local non league sides such as Stafford Rangers and Kidsgrove.

We've kind of flew under the radar building a modestly decent outfit, have arguably one of the best centre halves in the league (Nathan Smith) and think we will be strong, especially at home (although weve been decent at home for a couple of years now). Our hopes of challenging are and will be how we do away from Vale Park after only 2 away wins in all comps in 16 months.

You look to ring all of the alarm bells to me. Average looking squad, completely unproven manager, owner who doesn't really want to be there. Don't think you'll go down or anything but you've got a disappointing 17th placed finish all over you IMO.

Please note that this is my opinion and it's unlikely to have any correlation with anything that actually happens.

From the outside, I can see where you are coming from. Add to the fact that this is virtually a brand new team 1-11, which doesn't always go smoothly. Also, it's often the case that relegated teams don't do as well as they think they will.

Having said that, our owner has virtually zero input into anything to do with the club, and I suspect as soon as he receives the likely windfall from the sale of Hugill, he will accept one of the offers on the table. The place is ran by our Chief Executive, who makes all the major decisions on transfers etc. and seems like a guy who knows what he is doing.

Brown and Morgan lack experience yes, but I'm certain they won't tolerate anything less than 100% effort and commitment, which at this level often means winning more than losing.

I believe that Brown has recruited wisely so far with the likes of Pope, Kay, Wilson and Barnett providing the experience alongside slightly younger players such as Pike and Montano. Pope is still a good player at this level and he could really create the space for Pike to score. That amount of experienced old heads and leaders will see us through a number of games. Supplement this with a decent couple of loan signings in the next couple of weeks and I think our squad looks more capable than a lot in this league.

Put it this way, our squad looks far better than last season and we got relegated on the final day from the league above. I expect us to be top half minimum - 17th would be a disaster considering our size and budget relative to others in the league (believed to be in the top 8 budgets).

Agree with most of that, the aim from top to bottom of the club is play offs minimum and anything less would be disappointing all be it not necessarily expected.

Smurf taking a backward seat is a positive as he was a PR disaster and lacked football experience, the CEO running it has improved PR and knows what he is doing so if anything it is a positive. Budget is decent but some may have been used to pay off the unwanted players who were under contract like Mbamba, Reg, Kiko.

Nathan Smith should stand out at this level and if he isn't sold during the next 10 months will be a huge plus, add a half decent left back to Lawrie Wilson, Nathan Smith, Anthony Kay and you have a decent defence mixed with experience and youth.

Brown and Morgan are hard men of football so should get us physically up for it and Kellys experience will be key. Brown has built this squad so will have no excuses if he fails, he cant say he hasn't had the tools to build it this time, its just a shame he only finally cracked the solution to our away issues in the last 2 games of the season leaving us to much to do or we wouldn't be here!

Decent left back, Callum Guy returning on loan, hopefully get Chris Eagles to sign or another attack minded midfielder and I believe we will do well... but this is Vale after all so wouldn't shock me if we did flop!

The defence should be alright but I just don't see this team scoring enough goals or indeed creating enough chances. There's going to be a lot of clubs who will come to VP like last time we were down here and just shut up shop and I'm not convinced unless Eagles does re-sign there is anywhere near enough creativity to counter that. I'd say around 11th and 14th for Vale at a rough guess right now.
