2-2 draw with Blackpool yesterday. Some iffy refereeing decisions in there but all in all a decent game. Wycombe and Coventry in our next 2 league games will make for interesting viewing

After yesterdays tonking of Bolton by Accy, was wondering if Bolton will want to call off a few matches to regain their fitness and energy for some later games. We all know the EFL won’t mind.

Yes, I agree with most of that. We have improved a lot in the last couple of months and should be OK this season.

It was a game of fine margins really. We had sustained periods of pressure, particularly the first twenty minutes of the second half, and the pace of our attacking players caused Fleetwood big problems. However, we did not make the most of our chances and inevitably Madden popped up with the vital second goal against the run of play, showing the value of a prolific goalscorer.

We are just lacking that vital bit of quality in the key areas, but we can certainly compete with the better teams now.
Not sure of the name of your winger yesterday. double barrelled surname. We have a good right back in Lewie Coyle but he was skinned by the winger and must have been glad of the final whistle !

Corey Blackett-Taylor who we signed from Villa in the summer. He has taken a while to get going, but is starting to establish himself now.

We did ok yesterday, draw would have been a fair result but Fleetwood took their chances. Performances have improved, but in honesty our squad isn't really good enough for this level - strengthening needed in January. Defensively we concede poor goals every game, lack a playmaker in midfield (with Ollie Banks out injured) and scoring has been a problem all season. December is a big month for us before we can strengthen though - games against the teams around us and a very winnable FA cup tie. Do well, the future's bright. Do badly, claim exhaustion and cancel as many games as possible until January comes(!)

A strange game is football - we hadn't scored in 5 and Bolton had won their previous 3 League games. A lot of people stood near me thought that when Bolton scored early on it could be 4-0 to them! The sending off seemed to kill them.
A great day and a much needed win - a break now because we're out of the Cup but then Tranmere away.

Can't remember the exact wording but:

Lambert - "Blackpool came to defend"
Grayson - "I thought both teams attacked and wanted to score goals"

I do think that's a penalty, however I must have watched it 3 or 4 times to really see what's happening, on first viewing I just thought it was a coming together/he fell over as my eyes weren't naturally watching that movement.

Whilst it's the wrong decision, I can see how he missed it.

How are you finding refereeing decisions in L1 in comparison to L2? I find this season they're better, but last season was some of the worst I've ever seen

Dale had the majority of possession without really creating a lot, and for once we were ruthless in front of goal.

This is our problem at the moment. We've a paper thin squad hit by injuries but even when we have full fitness we seem to just keep the ball and do nothing with it as on Saturday. Get a team like yours taking their chances and we'll lose. So frustrating as there have been a few games where we've played really well and got nothing or only 1 point out of it. I think we'll stay up but the games are going to start running out unless we can grind some wins out.

Most of them are the same referees and we all know who the bad ones are. Carl Boyeston, Craig Hicks and Gavin Ward are the ones that automatically spring to mind but the guy we had on Saturday at Fleetwood, Josh Smith, newly promoted from the VNL, is a new name to me and one I hope never to see again. His performance was nothing short of abysmal. He was under the impression that full all in wrestling holds were acceptable parts of defending. When he finally did give us a free kick for about the 20th time one of our forwards had been either manhandled, body checked, pulled to the ground or obstucted by Fleetwoods CBs he received a full 30 second standing ovation from the entire away support. There was an incident in the second half when Fleetwoods keeper handled outside the area and he gave them the free kick. Not only was he useless but he was totally unfit to keep up with the game, was gasping for oxygen after less then 10 minutes and spent the vast majority of the game at walking pace. often with his back towards play. Quite frankily he looked, and acted, like some fat random who had been in the pub for several hours prior to the game who was asked did he fancy playing at ref for the afternoon.

Oh the irony - How long before kick off was it when you called of our game because you'd not covered the pitch properly!

But it's Oxford, one of the two teams who we seem to have a hex over (Walsall being the other, something like 4 losses in the last 50 games). If we were Essex Senior League and they were European Champions and we happened to meet in the 3rd round of the FA Cup I'd still turn up expecting us to win the game.

ooooh yes. Is this the worst Southend side I've ever seen? (30 years and counting) Technical ability and skill, no. Application, effort and desire, by a country mile, it's not even close.

I've seen some dross here, whether it be a stand out piece of crap in a decent team or an entire 11 that you questioned how they were professional footballers. But all of them to a man at least looked like they cared, tried to make up for their lack of ability by trying.

We haven't got bad players, the issue is the they don't want to be here, play for each other, the club or the fans. You can carry 1 or 2 of those in games, I've seen that before, what I've never seen until the start of this season was 8 or 9 literally not giving one shit and until they do we'll continue to be beaten week in week out.

I've heard we didn't really need to get out of first gear to win so your analysis about effort seems correct.

Fair play to the Southend fans still bothering to turn up.

According to the Oxford Mail article with Matty Taylor, our tactics were to sit deeper and let Southend have the ball as they knew mistakes would follow with overplaying. Karl Robinson and the coaching team weren't wrong albeit I doubt they expected it to be within the 1st minute.

I have a season ticket and yet, despite feeling depressed every time I watch them, I can't not go..

You'd probably only listen to it on the radio and read the reports I guess.

Our club said at the start of the season fans who only turn up for the big boys will have their season ticket taken away next season ..

Might be a few more taking the club up on that !!

I know the guys who run one of the away coaches. They've cancelled it to Burton - just 7 takers. They asked me if I wanted to go by coach but I couldn't commit due to not knowing what time I'd be leaving work. Yep that's right I'm still thinking about going to Burton away. There is something odd about going to games and already knowing the outcome but hey it makes betting easier.

In an already unbelievable season the laughs keep coming though, I entered some EFL screwfix competition and have been "rewarded" with what I can only describe as the worst prize to be handed out to any football fan ever - 2 home tickets to Southend v Rotherham. I'm genuinely trying to find out if I can get them changed to the away end. I won't be cheering on Rotherham, but I stopped applauding our shower a few games ago, I just sit/stand and watch on in awe at our truly disgusting efforts of being a football team.

Shocking decision by the linesman there at Ipswich. Sky sports showing the ball actually came off a Wycombe player & the linesman has flagged him as offside. Shocking.

Only Wycombe

Seriously, what the fuck is with the standard of referees in this league. It's appalling.

I still think we'll comfortably get ourselves out at first time of asking but it won't be thanks to them!

As for Wycombe.. thought they looked piss poor. Ultimately though they came for a point and managed it; with a little (a lot) help.

Pretty good game that. 2 teams scrapping it out. Wycombe did exactly what I thought they'd do and they're very good at it. Never seen a team waste time in the first 5 minutes but fair play. 5 points clear is some achievement. As for the officials, Jesus. Piss poor decisions all round but that's football. Both teams will be up there for sure

Sat in Poland on the sauce and this made my night even better.
We just love Sunderland away. 7 points from 9 at their place. Get in.
They must hate Liam Boyce.
We played well. I genuinely think we are a top 6 side if we can click. Trouble is consistency.

For some stupid reason I'm thinking of going to Bolton away

Statement win tonight, great performance and thoroughly deserved, even though it was an open affair and could have gone either way.

It sounded like a good game. Portsmouth seem to be overcoming there early season wobble and it certainly helps having a big crowd behind the team.

We are definitely missing Wood and Mattock at the back and I think we will be ok when these defenders can compete for a place.

Obviously it's disappointing to level twice and still lose but 3points at MK was a bonus after being 2 0 down.

It's our home form that's more of a worry.

Bruno Andrade out for 3 months with a double tear of his hamstring, picked up in the Ipswich FA Cup game. Great.
