this thread is basically comparing 2010 to 2015

would you have been happy if someone had said this is how your team would turn out aka your modern day team

i wouldnt as in 2010 Bolton were a mid table premier league team - i would have been upset if someone had said we would be second bottom in the championship

Fairly obviously not because we were a very stable upper mid table Premier League side. Now we're in a spiral ending in League Two.

Ha! Yep :) six years ago we were in League Two (08/09) having just had a crap season, looking relatively likely to drop out of the Football League. Last season we got into the play-offs for the Premier League.

Almost all thanks to Matthew Benham :) still find it funny when people were backing Warburton over Benham earlier this season...

July 2010 we had Steve Coppell and had just signed David James

August 2010 Coppell had resigned and James was clearly on an old prescription from the opticians.

Just about yes, the 2011/12 promotion was a great season, but apart from that the five years have been pretty bad. Take away the promotion and no chance.

Five years to the day since we sold Sigurdsson too :(

5 years ago we had Mick McCarthy and Clipboard Conor whilst getting smashed in the Prem. I prefer now in all honesty.

We had just been relegated to the third tier and had high Court trips over outstanding taxes, now our debt is to our owner and we've spent 8m on players with more to come.

Funnily enough 5 years ago was the last time we had a side capable of challenging in this division. This season is our only side since that season.

Yes. Almost everything about the club is better now than it was five years ago.

Five years ago, if someone told me Cardiff were going to switch their team colours to red, play in the Premier League and then switch back to blue after losing their final shred of dignity, I would have been very surprised. I had expected to be a Cardiff fan for my whole life, so I would have been very disappointed about it.

5 years ago, we were in the Championship, lots of big contracts, embroiled in a legal dispute about Ashton Vale ( :hb:) and playing in a much loved but old fashioned stadium.
After our 'holiday' down stairs, I think we would accept where we are due to the rebuild of the Gate but it's this season which is pivotal for us, we just cannot go back to L1.
I think we can accept where we are in comparison to 5 years ago but only just TBH.

Christ yes, almost as if this thread was made for us, as 2010 was the year we started our ascent from being a L1 also-ran playing at an athletics track to an established, well-supported Championship club with realistic ambitions of getting into the top flight.

It's not been without setbacks - we've had a couple of chances to get up in that time, and bottled it horribly at the expense of our bitterest rivals on one of those occasions, which is still pretty painful if I'm honest, but in the grand scheme I can't complain one bit with the way the club is run these days and the infrastructure Tony Bloom has built since taking the reigns. Beyond anything I could have imagined when compared to the club I knew growing up.

Yes and no. Five years ago, we'd just been relegated from the top flight, much like how we start this season now. Again, much like now, we'd spent two years in the top division before finding ourselves back out of it. There are, however, a few differences, both positive and negative. On the plus side, we find ourselves now with arguably the greatest squad we've ever had, with the team having a real chance of getting promoted at the first time of asking. The 2010/11 season started in turmoil, with the club moving ever closer to the possibility of liquidation due to huge debts incurred during the previous three years. I don't exaggerate when I say we would've gone out of business had the club not been bought - administration was never really a possibility due to the monies owed and the few assets we owned. The squad was weak, having lost many players in a bid to try and balance the books. The negative is largely off-the-field, with the relationship with our owners now being broken beyond repair. They no longer attend the games, and their offices have been cleared at the stadium as they refuse to step foot inside the ground. It is, of course, their fault entirely, and many welcome their non-attendance, but their actions have caused a wider disruption, with sections of fans having been turned against each other.

2010 was a pretty significant year for us, we went from the stability of Sullivan & The Golds to the fucking crook Carson, won the cup & got relegated. There've been some pretty desperate times between then & now, none more so than that day in Bolton, God only knows what could of happened to us if we'd gone down again. Luckily though someone was looking down on us and we stayed up, got rid of Lee Clark and got Gary Rowett in.

There's a very positive feeling around the club at the moment, despite still having a chairman who's locked up in a far off land, I'd take where we are now to those turbulent days all day long.

2010/11 was probably the most enjoyable season in the time I've been a season ticket holder. A squad mostly consisting of lower-league players that would run through brick walls for each other and never give up. So many memorable games, the amount of late goals we scored that season was ridiculous. The injury time winners against Millwall/Reading were great but it was all about that last gasp winner against Derby, never seen Carrow Road erupt like it did that day. The all important win at Fratton Park after Cardiff had bottled it against Boro. Smashing Town 4-1 home and 5-1 away. Jackson coming on late against Scunthorpe and scoring a hat-trick in the last 15 minutes to end his drought and begin an unforgettable April. It goes on. That season was great.

Been a bit hit and miss since then. 2011/12 was decent. 2012/13 was pretty bad, the 10-game run between late October and mid-December aside. 2013/14 was horrific - don't think we played football once that season. Last season was strange. The level of expectation was absurd and kind of spoiled it. So many of our fans have such delusions of grandeur it almost made losing worth it just to see them spit out their dummies. The play-off final was an awesome experience though.

Think if someone had said back then you'll spend four of the next five seasons in the top flight, I'd have taken it. If they told me I'd have to sit through a season and a half of the most boring football imaginable, I'd have been more hesitant. Think in the end, the experience of the play-off win might just have made Hughton's reign of terror worth it.

We were at the same level with a load of over-paid shite, implementing various cost cutting measures to reduce our debt and were relegated at the end of the season.

Now we have a hard working, likable squad that have just got us promoted and have cleared the debt, no guarantees we will survive though.

Can't be disappointed with our progress, although 4 years in League One wasn't ideal.

Yes. 5 years ago Steve Coppel had already left, and Keith Millen had just came in, with no experience of management. I was expecting to go down that season, so based on that, I would have been happy with it. We were also about to go into quite a bit of debt,so with that aswell, then yeah, I would be happy.

Hard to say. 2010/11 was a very exciting year. Getting promoted and fearing we would have it taken away over the signing of Faurlin was a bit weird. But, it was a great team that we had and it was a very good season. It was teh season after we had the likes of Magilton as manager, headbutting Buzsacky.

But, this year has a sense of excitement in a different way. We have a young team, but with a lot of quality scattered throughout it and real ambitions on getting into the play offs.

Inbetween has been so up and down it is unreal. 2 relegations, 1 promotion and about 500 players coming in and out in that gap.

2010/11 was our first year back in League Two after the ridiculous 'no away wins' League One season. Finished 8th, then 8th again, then 1st.

First season back in League One was tricky but we survived, then had a good second half to the season to finish mid-table last time out. Now we're top of the league, got 4 or 5 excellent young players, a highly rated young manager, no debt and a solid financial footing.

It's going pretty well now, but we were shite for a while!

If this thread is any indication, and it bloody is, it's that for football league clubs success and failure occur in pretty consistent cycles. Don't get too down. If your team is making you depressed, fuck football off. Start caring again when you can be arsed.

I'd be happy, in the same division as we were despite the vacation in league 1, however that allowed us to get the high earners off our wage bill (eventually) and we are now in a much better place, buying younger players who will develop and have resale value with the odd experienced player.

I would have laughed my socks off, and assumed that the bloke telling me had been drinking. Or assumed it was just a Football Manager game I'd spun up and edited to cheat my way through the leagues. The sort where you eventually win the Champions League with Barnet in 2020.

You won League 2 in 08/09. You must have been thinking of 07/08 when Terry Butcher was in charge.
As for my lot, we're sort of where we were in 09/10 in a much better stadium but not in our hometown area.

Well, I supported Cardiff City five years ago. Been an interesting five years. I've not been to any games since the unpleasantness. Not sure I'd be happy if told about it five years ago, but it's been nothing but positive for me since it happened. I've enjoyed football a lot more :)

Its been a crazy few years but we have gone from relegation favourites with nothing to spend and 3 sided ground to a very good squad (by our standards) and improved the stadium with owners who have helped the club progress on and off the pitch.

We've had a lot of players and managers of course but least we seem finically stable and its all pretty positive.

I don't understand how you can simply stop supporting your team. I know the owner changed a lot there which rightfully angered the fans, but from my experience I couldn't just stop supporting Wolves if something similar happened. Each to their own of course.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
i used to think that way Mark, but its one of the easiest things ever as I boycotted Carlisle for nearly 2 years recently when disagreed with their methods and had been going for 20 plus years previously.

I always used to think how can people who don't go fill in the afternoons (you know the turn up when good, go when crap brigade) but its so easy to fill that 2 hour gap you don't miss it at all, plus all that bitterness and hate you have from your reasons you hate you club get out the way and means you can enjoy general football again.

Wonder what situation will tempt the 2 Cardiff fans to return.....is it just owner change now?
