So depressing this, fuckers like the Queen, Diana Spencer and Mo fucking Farah are ahead of someone like Nelson. :ffs:

No room then for James Clerk Maxwell, Robert Burns. Admirals Cochrane and Duncan, Thomas Telford (though Brunel made the list), Robert Stephenson, Alan Turing and hundreds others I could list. I know its only in the tabloids and I'm not sure where they say the source of this is from, but it is so disheartening that idiots will choose c*** like David bleedin' Beckham ahead of so many other more valid names. Not even Andy Murray makes the list yet Jessica Ennis makes it! :mad:

As you say it's from a red top. Mo Farah ahead of Darwin and Shakespeare? It makes you despair. Churchill?

A case can be made for many for and against...not going to ever have people agree in unity.

I suspect vast swathes would have Thatcher higher up and vast swathes would list her as the worst Britain ever. Whatever...im hardly gonna go to The Mirror when I'm writing an essay on extraordinary Britains.

Does anyone remember the programme a few years ago where celebs picked their favourite Briton and campaigned for them to win? I believe Churchill won that with Anne Widdecombe* his campaigner. It was quite an interesting programme.

Anyway, Churchill is overrated I think. People felt so much for him he was kicked out at the first opportunity after the war.

For me, Newton is by far and away number one. Think of all that he did; calculus, laws of motion, law of gravity, his work with prisms and light, he even helped limit the number of counterfeit coins in circulation as Governor of the Royal Mint.

As others have said though, this is from the Mirror...

Churchill had his (many) faults but he's exactlly what we needed in that war, I think that's why he's fondly remembered

Paine or Tolkein?
Tolkein may have been born in South Africa (errr......not America), but his English family returned to England when he was three. He was brought up British and remained British until his death.
Paine was also brought up British and lived much of his adult life in the UK. His support (promotion even) of American independence doesn't preclude him from being a great Briton.
