It isn't their gun laws, though.

Fuck off, NRA.

That's not entirely fair mate because I'm sure that there is a minority of people over there that want guns banned. It's not inconceivable that some family members of the dead opposed gun ownership before this.

I know you're saying what you did out of frustration though because it's that ingrained in their culture that despite continuous gun massacres they will never legislate to ban guns

I've just watched the Fox News coverage of the breaking news. The scariest thing is how expertly they cover events like this, you can tell they've had plenty of practice.

Remember how much gravity Columbine had at the time and now? There's so many happening so often it's hard to keep up and that weight of shock is wearing thin.

45 mass shootings this year alone. Do you watch Fox for a laugh?

45? Holy fuck.

I used to watch Hannity & Colmes and O'Reilly for a laugh. The breaking news report was Shep Smith, he's a good egg. The report was entirely focused on updating the event, not politicising it. I'm sure that'll come later.

Hannity's show used to be a joint show with a liberal called Alan Colmes, it was supposed to be a balanced argument between the two political parties. Hannity always had the bulk of time though. After Obama was elected they decided to stop pretending and just dropped Colmes from the show altogether. You have to love them.

Online reports here indicate that after the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre (20 small children and 6 teachers shot dead), the Sheriff of Douglas County - scene of yesterday's violence - wrote to US Vice President Joe Biden declaring that he and his deputies would refuse to enforce new gun control restrictions "offending the constitutional rights of my citizens".

I assume that when the dust settles on this awful tragedy, if anyone has the temerity to again suggest gun controls (note: controls, not abolition) he will once more write to Vice President Biden, reinforcing that he and his deputies will refuse to enforce new gun control restrictions offending the constitutional rights of his citizens. Except the dead ones and their families and friends who might be less offended.

Murder rates per 100,000 population
USA - 4.7
UK - 1.0
Italy - 0.9
Netherlands - 0.9
Sweden - 0.7

Think long and hard about the whole US "we need guns to defend ourselves" angle. Seriously? For real? Look at the figures again. You realise that the higher numbers are bad?

European countries (excluding former Soviet states) with a murder rate worse than USA
Greenland - 19.4
Albania - 5.0

Countries in Africa with lower murder rate than USA
Malawi, Sao Tome, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone
All figures 2012 (some from earlier years)

Have we a flag or some other worthless thing to blame it all on.

maybe there was a PE lesson at fault and we should remove Baseball from American society to demand freedom.

Kid was born in the UK, apparently. No doubt the media over there will spin that story and try to blame his British roots.

I think the scariest thing about this is how de-sensitised people are now to it.

Some American (Didn't catch his name or role) just said on the Radio 2 news that this wouldn't have happened if the students were armed as well as they could have defended themselves.....

Why don't they just change the entire USA country into some big huge massive Battle Royal game like in that Japan film.....would be a lot easier, feed everyone a weapon and see where it goes.

News here is just an entertainment show. Not gonna lie, for all the bias news they put out, I enjoy watching Fox News just cuz its more entertaining.

I just hope some mentally ill / stressed person at my Uni does not get an idea from something like this.

Agreed as it happens so often so when it does i'm never shocked. The gun lobby in America will never give up their right to own a gun so doubt anything can be changed to try and prevent future mass shootings.

If I ditch my 'not giving a sh*t' attitude for a moment and put in a serious question.

why does it seem to always involve a lot of teens in the US?? we've had 3 big shootings here but they were done by grown ups.

Is there something seriously wrong in the teaching set-ups in the US?...by that I mean, whack on a lot of stress and pressure, a lot of bullying, still a lot of segregating groups etc, etc??

Even if there's a blanket ban Australia style, I read that there's 88.8 guns per 100 people in circulation in America. You'd have to have one hell of a long gun amnesty to even make a dent in that.

The media will huff and puff.
Politicians will huff and puff.
And no-one will do anything.
Because that's what politicians do.
