I'm currently eyeing them with intent . Worth a punt or a waste of money?

I'm a huge fan of Nintendo, and even I don't own one!

Is that an indication of it's worth, or just haven't got round to it yet?

It's basically the same old same old Nintendo have put out since the SNES with essentially zero third party games other than Bayonetta 2.

Nintendo's third party support has never been great, but it's never been this bad. There was only really Ubi Soft supporting it from the start, and whereas they've stayed loyal to Nintendo in the past, even they've cleared off now.

Nintendo consoles have always been about the first party games though, and that's the problem. Until Smash Bros came along in November, the only other game worth thinking about was Mario Kart. Everything else is either a remake, or the lesser series' like Pikmin.

As much as I want to play Smash Bros, there still isn't enough there for me to jusify the cost. I don't believe things are going to improve either, it's been out too long now.

I've owned it since about April/May of last year when Mario Kart came out. My experience with it thus far:

Mario Kart 8: Brilliant game, the best released in 2014. Mario Kart at the best it's ever been, which yes, is saying something quite profound.

ZombiU: Bought it for a fiver when I got the console. Played it once.

Super Smash Bros: It's awesome, of course, but I've only really found myself playing it on the rare occasions where I get together with a group of mates and we play some multiplayer. Which hasn't been all that often. And I am just never arsed to piss about with the single player. As great as it is, I've probably only loaded the game up about 8 times in total.

So my view... for now, I'd only really recommend it if you regularly get together with friends to play games. Because if you do, there are very few games that can give you as good a time as Mario Kart and SSB. If not... I wouldn't really recommend it as a single player console at all. Once Zelda is out, though, that may change...

Cheers guys. I've been reading stuff online about how it was finally worth picking one up, but I think I'll hold off for a while. The Virtual Console is something that really appealed to me over anything else.

Does the Wii-u still have games like virtual sports and all the kind of stuff that made the original Wii popular?

I got one and I love it
Smash Bros, although as Oaf mentioned, not too many people love it for it's single player.
There's also Zelda Wind Waker HD which is great, and Bayonetta 2 which is easily one of the best action/hack and slash games ever made.
The wonderful 101 is apparently decent although i haven't tried it, plus the entire Wii back catalog if you want.

It does still have the likes of Wii Sports Resort and a couple other little mini game collection type things. Not actually tried any of them myself though, admittedly.

That is a good point though... I think when I think back to the Wii, I'm pretty sure that overall my favourite game on the console was Wii Sports. Paper Mario was a close second and Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were both superb, but Wii Sports was something special when it came out.

I tried the demo of The Wonderful 101 and thought it was utter shite. Not sure what the appeal is.

I saw the other day they've cancelled the tv on demand feature that you could watch through the controller. That tells you a lot about how poorly the console is doing, when they're scrapping one of the big features they were pushing before release. It was supposed to be available at release initially too.

I am tempted by Bayonetta 2, but I rented the first one from lovefilm a couple years back and just couldn't get into it so sent it back. Kind of puts me off trying the second one.

I caved in to my obsessive nature and bought one of these for £199 with Mario Kart 8. There's a few decent-looking Wii U games and a large enough Wii back catalogue to keep me occupied for a long time.

£200 with a game isn't bad value actually. Might have to consider one myself in the future (still waiting for the prime moment to get XBone first). Probably just for Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros and Mario Party.

WiiU has been doing awful in sales though which has massively put me off. It's sold a predicted 2 million less units than the XBone (9m < 11m) despite being out a year longer and won't be long until the PS4 has sold double the amount. All this with a much lower retail cost.

I used to be a Nintendo fan, but I can quickly see them becoming just a handheld 3DS supplier at this rate.

Can't say I blame you, that was exactly what I did... thought "nah..." then bought it anyway :fl:

Got the same bundle at the same price I got it for last year. Mario Kart 8 is so damned good.

I wouldn't look into sales that much really... I mean, the Wii is the best selling console of all time, but it's far from being the best!

Unlike Sega, Nintendo have bucket loads of money coming from all over the place. Even if their next console is a flop, they'll still keep going.

They need to stop with this innovation rubbish though, and just release a console that matches up spec wise. Do that, and I'll be back with Nintendo and back playing the latest Zelda's and Mario's.

The Wii U is currently behind the Sega Saturn in sales. :fl:

The PS4 has almost overtaken the GameCube's lifetime sales, and isn't far off the original Xbox either.
