In Conference days the stand nearest road was the Away stand.
When promoted to the EFL apparently the away fans had to be moved to stop them using same toilets as home fans.
FGR then spent a small fortune erecting a seated bus shelter to accommodate EFL ground regulations. They could have spent the money more wisely by adding a set of toilets to that stand.
As it is FGR have shot themselves in the foot. Away supporters have the entire length of pitch to influence the game.
A lot of FRG supporters were less than happy to forego watching game from the 'Wet' West Stand because it was closer to the action and the sun was on their backs. Those in the VIP stand have to squint to watch game whenever sunny.
And the prevailing wind and rain is from the west, so those standing in West Stand are less bothered by getting wet than those opposite in the VIP East Stand who get soaked in the face.
When we moved into TNL, back in 2006, the away stand was the South Stand...near the changing rooms...I gather a previous manager (possibly Dave Hockaday) asked for the away stand to be swapped to the North so his players didn't have to walk onto the pitch past away fans as there were very few of ours in the West. The issue this presented was that the South Stand previously had seats in it at that stage, which were then removed, so we needed to give up part of the Main Stand to away supporters...as most of the teams that visited brought very few fans who wanted to be seated. This worked reasonably well until one particular team visited, were allocated two whole blocks in the Main Stand and it didn't go very well. After that game the club said that away fans would never be accommodated in an area where there were home fans.

There were a few games early in our time at the ground where away fans were allocated two stands, think that may have been the case for the Derby FA Cup game, as the club wanted to maximise income...when average home support was around 800-1000 that made perfect sense. However, like our time in the Conference, those days are well behind us.

Our max away allocation may go down if the increase in home support continues.

Fortunately, I do:

2015 – 804
2018 – 765
2019 – 944
2020 – 0 (for obvious reasons).

Based off the top of my head, the 2019 figure would be around the 10th highest.
Thanks. But there always seem to be dispute about figures for these ElGlosico matches. I don't have the figures to challenge but I note that attendance at Cheltenham has increased since 2019 which would mean that the FGR numbers would be top of away support for that year. From memory it was a common comment that FGR always brought most away fans to WR. The crowd of 5,125 that season was Cheltenham's largest that actually supports my opinion.

What is fun for away fans at Whaddon Road is that the acoustics in that stand are brilliant. A small number of fans can make as much or more noise than the entire Cheltenham support. I enjoy watching games at WR as an away supporter.

The only person I've seen dispute any of these attendances is you. These are the figures from the Cheltenham Twitter feed.

Whilst FGR may have been the top away attendance in 2019 - they had 8 more than Newport - the fact remains that in all of our games, at no point has the Colin Farmer been allocated to FGR fans like it has routinely for Oxford and Plymouth, and was for all of the ex-Prem teams last season.

Again, from memory, no-one I know even mentions who brings the most fans to Whaddon Road because I don't think anyone really cares apart from you.

As you rightly claim I care about this issue (as surely you do as well).

Pondering about your reply overnight I realised that we are talking at cross purposes.

I maintain that every season that Cheltenham & FGR competed in same division FGR brought most away support to WR.

Whereas you’ve pointed out that in other years other teams have been offered the larger Colin Farmer Stand; something that has never been offered to FGR.

Should that be the same this season, I’ll concede that Oxford & Plymouth will have more support.

But I’m willing to bet that the ElGlosico match will be amongst the better attended games at WR (if not best) during 2022-23.

There are few things that I find more tedious than attendance dick-waving but at least one of those seasons Swindon will have been in the same division (I’m assuming they played at Cheltenham before Covid ended the season they won the league). No disrespect but there is no way you’d have brought more fans to Cheltenham than Swindon did just to name one off the top of my head. I would also add Exeter too most probably.

Swindon, Cheltenham & FGR have never all been in same division at same time.

Apprently we had 1,432 at Cheltenham on August 24th 2019 that season you refer to. 2-2 draw, Trevor Kettle in charge.

Have a look at the 2019/20 L2 lineup (and there’s prior seasons too)….

You're right. I will.
Except to say that FGR sell out their full ticket allocation.

I imagine Plymouth also took more than 944, as well that season.

But nevertheless, you sell out most the ticket allocation because they don't give you the other stand?

The stand holds 1,100 people - if it sells out and further tickets are requested, then 2 blocks of the Colin Farmer are given to away fans - this is an additional 460+ seats.

Based on the figures, FGR have never requested the additional tickets.

I know FGR Stroud wants to make this game something it isn't, he's been doing it for such a long time now, and he will continue to push that FGR are some massive rival. Whilst I can accept that a lot of our younger support do see FGR as probably the main rival now, the fact that we have never sold out for an FGR game tells its own story.

EDIT - Plymouth brought 1,222 in 19/20, but it was Boxing Day, so is usually a bumper crowd. They brought 1,512 this past season.

Obviously Cheltenham are a bigger club than us, not least as they've been in the EFL (under whatever name) for nearly 20 years longer than us, with a few separate spells in the third tier during that time. (As for Exeter never mind anyone bigger than that, including Swindon....)

And while Chelt may not be football-fan central, we are famously "the little village team".

The only thing I'd complain about at Whaddon Road is the quality of the catering. Obviously we almost always sell out our ticket allocation there. No less obviously bigger clubs than us will sell more!

I'd not give the bigger clubs another stand; we won't sell out ourselves but the few extra bob not worth the boost to the oppo plus I should imagine the extra logistical headache of getting the away fans in up the top of that hill. Going to be a few right circuses I imagine.

Cheltenham, Swindon and Exeter are all clearly bigger clubs then us that get bigger crowds home & away. We will not bring anywhere near the most fans to Cheltenham in League 1 next season. It will be 900-1000 tops, which is about 40% of our home average.

Since the resumption of matches between FGR & Cheltenham Town in 2015 ElGlosico matches have always been a sell out.
Obvious because it is a local Gloucestershire game which will attract casual fans from within the County who don't always attend games.
Whether they will be largest crowds at WR and/or TNL next season for 1st ever matches in League 1 we'll only know next May.
If not then the attendances will not be far short of biggest.

Be surprised if they are, would think the visit of e.g. Derby would bring more out for both home teams and fill the away end.

Where do you get this bs? Football League attendances between the teams, away fans in brackets

24.11.17 - The New Lawn - 3,641 (985)
14.04.18 - Whaddon Road - 4,944 (765)
20.10.18 - The New Lawn - 3,582 (682)
29.12.18 - Whaddon Road - 5,125 (879)
02.11.19 - Whaddon Road - 5,788 (944)

Not one of those is a sell out.

But it looks like you haven't sold it out, 944 that you brought isn't even a sell out of the 1,100 stand before you get the extra stand, which you've never had
