Interesting that you say fishcakes, I would say 'rizzoles', but then I spent my teenage years growing up in Deedah City. tha laikin ? (spelled wrong ?)

I'm familiar with "Tha laikin" but I can't honestly say I've heard of rizzoles, must be a Sheffield thing I grew up in the western part of the borough and there's sod all in the way of slang round here. The town centre and areas to the east are brilliant though, stuff I've literally never heard anywhere else. Favourites include "bairning" (whinging, whining, "stop thi bairnin'!") and "pillocking" (kidding, deceiving), as in the Oakwell favourite "he's pillockin' ya ref!"

Never heard it in Penistone, which is odd as it's barely 20 minutes from Barnsley. First heard it from my uncle who grew up and still lives in the middle of town, only ever heard it in pubs in the centre and at Oakwell. You're lucky if you hear the odd thee and tha round my way

I'd imagine so, that's only a couple of miles from the centre. Tha knows.

I'll allow cob as I lived in Notts for four years and there's something pleasing about the rustic, no-nonsense simplicity of the word. Muffin, roll, barm, batch or any other variation that isn't teacake can do one.
