Solskjaer is the obvious one. Who are other notable players that never cemented spots within their team but stood out?

Steve Harper? For a while Newcastle had probably the best keeper pairing in the league.

Always thought Benayoun was good when he got a game.

Wrong forum.

Why do so many 1FF-ers fail to understand this basic tenet of message boarding: the "off-topic"section is not to be used as a dumping ground for inane, broadstroke soccerball topics that don't fit comfortably into the other, league specific-fora.

Thanks.

You assuredly wouldn't be the first, and I sincerely fear that you would not be the last, either. I've raised the issue with the forum staff on more than one occasion, but nothing has been done, no action taken. I can only assume they are unfamiliar with Wilson and Kelling's "Broken Windows Theory".

Cambridge United (and reminisces about Barrow AFC)

Bobby Knox was one of the first "always on the bench" players for Barrow AFC. He was a genuine second choice centre forward, centre half and decent keeper at the time that substitutes were introduced into league football. He was the second sub to come on in a league match, after Keith Peacock at Charlton, and the first to score a goal - in the same match against Wrexham, giving us a 4-2 win. I was there - August 1965.

He was also the first sub to save a penalty, against Doncaster Rovers. He replaced Lionel Duffin (Fred Else was out injured) and his penalty save ensured a 2-1 win. I was there - December 1965.
