PS1 still wins for me.

I've got a lot of fond memories of the Mega Drive but for me it is a toss up between the PS1 and the PS2.

I had both the PS1 and PS2, my PS2 broke quickly though so I can't speak for it.

SNES is also a shout. I'm not a huge Nintendo fan but it had some of the best RPG games ever. Also had Link to the Past.

Fuck, that's tough. In terms of quantity of quality titles... I'm undecided between the PS1, PS2 and Xbox 360. Those three consoles in particular had a fuck ton of great games.

PS1 one for me. FF7-9, MGS, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 1-3, Suikoden, Alundra, Castlevania: SotN and the rest. I'd probably have the PS2 in the second spot followed by, errrrrrr, I dunno.

I never owned an 8 bit or 16 bit console as I very much preferred computers during those generations (Vic 20, C64 then an Amiga 500 before moving onto the 1200). I've only owned 4 consoles, so out of those it would be:-

1) PS2
2) Xbox 360
3) PSP
4) Nintendo Wii (was actually the wife's but will include it).

Think PS1 got there first mate. But N64 had Mario 64 and latterly Ocarina of Time which are arguably the most influential 3D games of all time.

Indeed. Plus it was easy to chip and hack the games down to 700mb so they'd fit on a CD in the days when DVD writing cost a fortune. For backup purposes of course.

Never enjoyed the original Xbox that much. Think my favourite game was Ninja Gaiden Black and I also quite enjoyed Fable. P.S Go fuck yourself Peter Molyneux.

Ninja Gaiden Black was the shit. I also remember playing a lot of Jet Set radio Future, Need for Speed Underground, Psychonauts, one of the Splinter Cell games and one game I don't remember the name of, nor can I ever find it, but it was awesome. You played as an assassin chick and the game had a really unique for a shooter (at the time) cel shaded art style.

N64 having Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros and Conker's Bad Fur Day (amazing game) means it wins for me. When you compare them to other games available at the time, OoT and Goldeneye were just so much better than anything else, and it's hard to beat Mario Kart 64 and Smash Bros for multiplayer gaming.

Plus, having everything on cartridge instead of CDs meant you didn't have to faff around with loading times or memory cards, everything for every game loaded instantly and was easy to save.

N64 was massively let down by lack of 3rd party support, while it had most of the top games, it didn't have the biggest of selections. I also think everyone would have a much higher opinion of the console if the Gamecube hadn't been such a large piece of wank, Nintendo have found it hard to recover since then (bar the Wii).

The lack of 3rd party support on the N64 was thanks to Nintendo's decision to stick with what was already an outdated medium back in the mid 90s - cartridges. They were far more expensive to produce than CDs, something the PS1 and Saturn had already proved was the way forward. It was a massive mistake by Nintendo, not only did it stop game production on a massive scale, but it also resulted in a maximum game size a fraction of what could be fitted on a CD. By the time they realised this with the GameCube they were already lagging well behind Sony.

It's a shame as well, because the GameCube was a cracking console with some absolutely stunning games at the time. Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Super Smash Melee and Wind Waker could all easily feature at the top end of a "best games of all time" list.

As for best console, it's purely objective but whilst N64 defenders will claim that Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye and Mario 64 were unsurpassed, the Playstation had so many more "game changers" in reality. This is the console that had Final Fantasy 7, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil - all of those games made huge impacts on the industry in one way or another. The PlayStation 2 just expanded on that and arguably has the greatest games library out of the lot.

Still, you could also argue that the X-Box 360 has had the most longevity of any console in history. I got mine in 2006 and played it regularly until last year. How many consoles have constantly been able to hold your attention for almost a decade with new releases? Then of course there's the Wii which changed the whole gaming landscape completely, although arguably not for the better.
