Zola and maybe even Dennis Wise have to be in Chelsea's. Luiz over Desailly and Lebeouf too? No chance. Can't speak for all time ever really, but general consensus would be that Jimmy Greaves and Charlie Cooke should be in there somewhere.

Yeah, wasn't really thinking right. I'd probably be the worst at this on the forum because I've only followed football for a few years.

These things always seem to work better as an 'In Your Lifetime' way, as opposed to an 'All Time Ever' thing, in my opinion.

In my lifetime Villa:

Friedel
Delaney Mellberg Laursen Bouma
Milner Petrov Barry Young
Carew Benteke

Whether Carew and Benteke would work up top is another question, I would also like to stick Milner in midfield and bring in Barry, so perhaps a 4-5-1 with Benteke leading the line. We've genuinely not had any decent Right-Backs have we? I could stick Mellberg there and Dunne in the middle, but that's kind of cheating.

That's a lot of Cups in one competition :D

Yeah, Everton in the 80's was a household name in Europe, too.

My historical XI of the HSV would be with Kevin Keegan in it. The mighty mouse brought us back to the top after he came from Liverpool to HSV in 1977. And this endured even until the Mid80's (when we won the European Cup Winners and even the biggest one, the European Cup).
I could name the teams of the HSV in that period here but I think nobody gives a fuck ;)

Wouldn't that be better with Bale at RM and another left back? Rose/BAE?

Admittedly I didn't see Le Tissier in his prime, my dad started taking me in 98, but it was always fascinating to just see how much him being on the ball would lift the crowd at the Dell.

Couldn't pick between Lallana and Tadic.

Is this some kind of mocking about my english that you write this? If yes, then sorry that I don't speak/write perfect english. If not, then sorry again because I don't get the joke. I am German and we have no humour ;) (but it has to be a great one because 2 members gave their "approval" with a thank you).

Not sure how old you are Jase, but no Paul McGrath? Up there with the best defenders for me, which considering his off field problems is quite amazing. Having said that, Mellberg and Laursen were superb together. Kyle Walker was at Villa on loan for a bit, is that cheating for the right back slot?

Our current side is technically speaking the best side the club has ever had.

However the Championship title winning team from a couple years ago will forever be special. Elphick, Kermorgant, Ritchie, Pitman etc who've since moved back to the Championship. The current day squad might be better as individuals, but the telepathic movement and spirit of that title winning side made it far better than the sum of it's parts.

Older folk will make a case for individual players from our past like Ted MacDougal / Phil Boyer / Harry Redknapp in the 70s, and Ian Bishop / John Willams / Shaun Teale / Luther Blissett in the 80s.

I think that translates as: A novelty when we roll over most weeks, until we start beating the established mediocrity like Everton? Then we just become annoying! Happy to clarify :)

Went to my first match in the early 70s, so for me:-

Team.jpg

Debated about Reina most of all, but for a few seasons around 2007-2009 he was the best keeper in the league for me, in terms of ability he was above both Clemence and Grob, both legends and the only other two in consideration. Shame his time here fizzled out the way it did. Honourable mentions to the likes of Beardsley, Fowler and Rush. Either Rush or Fowler could have been on this list if it weren't for Suarez. Complete c*** he might have been but there isn't a team in this country for who he wouldn't be on a best XI list had he played for them.

Stupid formation with players playing out of position, as has been traditional for the Welsh side (until the most recent vintage!)

Mentions for Paul Jones, Mark Delaney (who was a better player than Gunter, but I can't leave him out), Simon Davies, Barry Horne & Mark Hughes

Presuming loans don't count:

Barrett
Omozusi - Baudry - Mkandawire - Daniels
Odubajo - Chambers - Thornton - Cox
Lisbie - Simpson

Biggest decisions were goalkeeper as there's been a bunch of average ones and left back as Daniels/ Lockwood should really both be in there.
