Best Midfielders in PL Era

This is why I want a general football chat section... Tisk.

But anyway, we've seen some truly fantastic midfielders in the premier league, some that score some, some that grab the game and change it, some that tackle some. However, in all of what you've seen, (and this is where it will get tricky), your best midfield TRIO in the PL era.

I start this because I read a Mourinho quote earlier when he said he tried to sign Gerrard and dreamed of a Makelele, Gerrard, Lamps trio, which is mouth watering as fuck. Maybe England could have won something if Makelele and Hargreaves were swapped at birth but oh well.

So we've have some real names and talents -- Scholes, Alonso, Mascherano, Vieira, Keane, Gilberto, Joey Barton

Tough choice imo

Chelsea - Essien, Ballack & Lampard

Man Utd - Carrick, Scholes & Fletcher (?)

Arsenal - Fabregas, Gilberto & Flamini

The only thing I remember about Ghaly is him throwing his shirt down infront of the Spurs fans when he got subbed.

we're playing without a dedicated holding midfielder cos thems just limited players who aren't talented enough to play centre mid and aren't disciplined enough to play centre back really. makelele the one exception. speed could do a bit of everything, defensive work, attacking, goal scoring.... the lot. like vieira but with 18 yard bullet headers as a brucey bonus. if one goes up, the other sits. scholes is free to do what he wants as long as he doesn't try to tackle people. we'd dominate world football us.

Just beginning to reach his peak in his final season here and became the player he is now. The PL never really saw the best of him.

This is precisely what I've pointed out numerous times in the past on TFF, and a few times on here too I think. I love Alonso but, in terms of his quality in a Liverpool shirt, it seems to have transcended in some people's minds over time to something that didn't actually happen. Overall he was fantastic but he had good and bad seasons with by far his best the last campaign before he moved to Real. The season before that he was so-so at best.

In his final campaign I always suspected he went out of his way to make a point after Benitez tried to whore him off the summer before. If so, he did it brilliantly, he was our best player in 08/09 when we challenged for the title.
