We made a bid for Paul Scholes in the mid nineties, bet he's grateful Fergie told us to fuck off.

You will like this one.

I have it on very good authority that we almost signed Jamie Vardy from FC Halifax Town.

Apparently we were willing to offer as much as Fleetwood, but the difference was that Fleetwood offered to pick Jamie up from a service station while our manager (Nicky Law) told him to make his own way to the ground to sign a contract with us. He chose to except Fleetwood offer of a chauffeur.

He'd also agreed terms with Macc before then and was supposed to be coming in to sign before he got a better wage offer. This was when we were in the League, so he stayed in non-League for more money!

Pretty sure Man City didn't try to sign Vardy? Odd that he'd stay in non-league ahead of playing for Man City really.

Rolls eyes. I may be wrong and I'm ignoring two posts about great players who nearly joined United, but I suspect not. Well done on derailing another thread with the same pointless, repetitive garbage. You're awesome.

In 1978 our local papers had the headline in the backpage.

Blades to sign teenage sensation Maradona.

No one had heard of him, think Diego was 16 yrs old and very highly rated.
He agreed to join us and most of the board agreed to sell.

However the deal fell through at the last minute.
Apparently their owner was on holiday and when he returned he wanted a bit more money.

Sheffield United refused and bought their 2nd choice target instead.
Alex Sabella (the current Argentina manager) from River Plate.
To be honest Sabella had the skill of Maradona (yes seriously) but no pace (knicknamed The Sloth in Argentina) and was lightweight, hated playing on muddy pitches and cold rainy windy conditions.

If you are who I think you are, what took you so long? I remember you posting quite frequently on the old 1FF.

Does make you think had we signed all the players we have been linked with over the years. And we didn't need Zidane when we had Sherwood in midfield.

Others we've been linked with but never signed are Roy Keane and Hernan Crespo in the 90s. And then we had the likes of Ronaldinho, Beckham and Riquelme touted as joining us when Venkys took over.

And that's not even the most random thing Venky's have done

I believe he was referring to me there mate, he still reads my posts after "ignoring" me.

He escalated our little dispute last night and I'm afraid that it's all going to end in tears.

Do you know what sarcasm is? Because that wasn't it.

sarcasm
ˈsɑːkaz(ə)m/
noun
noun: sarcasm; plural noun: sarcasms
the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.

Just to save you having to look up the meaning.

Yeah... It still wasn't sarcasm.

I'm not sure if it could be classed as a rhetorical device at all really. It doesn't even really work as wilful misinterpretation, as there wasn't really anything to 'interpret' there.

Yes. You didn't do that though. You attempted to imply that I was talking about Manchester City in the post, when it was literally spelled out in words of one syllable that I wasn't.

You can repost it bigger if you like. Then go and backslap with the bigger boys on what they would probably class as 'epic bantz', or chalk it up to experience.

Now now. Don't go bringing out that one. It's classic moron territory. Realise that you've been bested and change tack to make it personal.

Write this one off and lick your wounds. You tried to live up to the high standards set by the forum's United supporting intellectual heavyweights* - perhaps to go out in a blaze of glory before your move to the championship place - and were found wanting. Live and learn.

* This, you see, actually IS sarcasm.

Right, back on topic, we also nearly signed Andy Cole from Bristol City, apparently it was all but agreed, but Doug Ellis couldn't find where the hell Ron Atkinson had gone ( ) to confirm the signing. We almost signed Lampard from West Ham, but the fucker joined Chelsea instead, and we know how that went... Inter stole Sneijder before we managed to convince him to sign, we almost signed Roberto Carlos, but Brian Little didn't like him, so he went on loan to Inter for the season, and we know how that turned out.

Milan Mandaric claims that Didier Drogba was on the verge of signing for Pompey in 2003 when we got promoted to the Premier League but we weren't willing to pay the £3 million asking price at the time. Ouch!

Michael Carrick was going to sign for us from West Ham but Arsenal stuck their noses in at the last minute, then decided they didn't want him, then he ended up at Spurs instead.

Ronaldo being the one, although I heard it was because it was either Benitez or Houllier at the time didn't think he was good enough.

Over more recent years there's been a few. Pretty much anyone we get linked with then gets linked with either Chelsea or Tottenham though. Either lazy media or our scouts are insiders for them.

Within the last few years I'd probably say Willian, Mhiktariyan, Diego Costa and Sanchez. There's probably a couple of others but at this time of the morning they're the ones that spring to mind within a few seconds.

Come off it. You're saying Figo wouldn't have gone on to become a worldwide superstar by getting relegated into League One with City?

I don't buy it. Alan Ball would have steered him right. No question.

It's semantically sound. The fact you stated which team you were referencing along with a possessive, personal pronoun when you claim not to support Macclesfield anymore puts the cherry on the cake. I showed this to my fellow students and tutor today and everyone laughed at you. You're an idiot.
