Yeah, beer advent calendars have been going a few years now. I've never bought one coz I've always sort of thought you could do your own customised selection for a similar price. However, having checked out that link that's actually a pretty good deal and I'm quite tempted! Yes, it's a fair whack but that Black Friday Discount code would take it down to £2.50 / beer. Looking at some of the excellent breweries involved that's actually really good value as I think you'd struggle to find a lot of those beers at equivalent prices elsewhere. Might take the plunge...

My sister bought me one last year but I didn't particularly appreciate it as I very much a weekend drinker. I see zero point in drinking by myself.

I've lost an annual golf bet to a friend of mine and have to buy him a bottle of whisky for a third year in a row. Fortunately, I'm out with him on the night I have to present it so I'll be able to drink a good bit of it myself.

We're both big fans of Lagavulin but its too obvious. Any suggestions?

Incidentally, whats a good Irish whiskey?

Well if you like your peaty Islay whiskies around the Lagavulin price point, you can't go wrong with Ardbeg 10/Uigeadail, Caol Ila 12 or a Kilchoman (Machir Bay is readily available and it has a vanilla note through it along with the peat smoke). It depends on what you are looking for there tbh; if you want campfire/chimney smoke in your whisky you could try some of the above; but if you like the more iodine/seaweed/damp wood note, then a Laphroig will do, just not the Select as that tastes like a watery ashtray! Better with the 10yo or even better if you could get Quarter Cask, that is very intense! Port Charlotte from Bruichladdich distillery is also excellent. If you like a hint of peat with a more briny nature, then Talisker 10 (or 54 North if you want a cask strength version) will suffice and is softer than a lot of the above, a bit like the Lag 16. If you want to stick with Lagavulin, I tried the 8 yo earlier this year and it is also excellent, though a bit more lively than the 16 which I think is quite a lovely mellow peaty whisky. Also Johnnie Walker Double Black or Green 15 are mellow smoky whiskies too, but are blends.

There are others I could recommend, but then you are talking higher price points, or more obscure and hard to get in the shops whiskies. If you are buying online, then you can't go wrong with TheWhiskyExchange or MasterOfMalt, though you may find cheaper prices elsewhere.

I could recommnd others if you like other types of whiskies too, like citrusey, briny, sherried, light, honeyed etc; but for the peat monsters, you can't go wrong with the above.

As for Irish whiskey tbh I haven't tried any! Though I did hear good things about Redbreast 12, which I did buy the other week, but yet to get on it.

I've woke up with a hangover from hell after the works Christmas party shenanigans ,so I'm retaining a low profile as the wife isn't a happy bunny after I slept in the consecrated grounds of her orangery.

I will of course be less covert and less meek when the disgruntled one retires to bed and seek out a bottle of Courvoisier I stashed away.

I'm thinking around 9.30 tonight when I suggest I accompany her to bed and if its just the obligatory Gallic shrug she throws me then I can work my way around that :shifty: If its a stream of French expletives then its me and the cognac.
