Well, not sacked as such. But West Ham aren't renewing his contract, which comes as no big surprise.

Big Sam actually found out about it on Friday but for the club to announce it within minutes of the season ending is incredibly savage.

As I was saying in the box, it's just classless even if they did tell Sam on Friday - let the dust settle and do it tomorrow at least. He's done a good job there for what he was asked to do, and some of the stick he's received is totally unfair from some supporters that quite frankly expect too much when he probably had inklings from the board that his job was under severe threat back in January.

Such unfair treatment towards Allardyce - and I don't dislike West Ham at all, but I'd be well happy to see them go down next season, just for the way the fans and board have acted towards Allardyce.

He'll find another job and will succeed in it - he's a Tony Pulis type manager, he gets the job done.

Are West Ham not allowed to show any ambition beyond getting the 'job done'?

Is there any reason why West Ham shouldn't be looking at pushing for Europa League football?

Agreed. Unless the job is "take us beyond midtable mediocrity and awful football".

Don't get the fuss. His contract is up and they want to explore other options. The timing of the announcement is a bit vindictive but I don't see a problem with the club not offering him a new deal.

Unless the owner puts his hand deep into his pocket - no.

And considering that the owner has previously been quoted to say that he wants to make sure that they are in the PL for the Olympic Stadium move - Sam Allardyce would have confirmed that.

So Spurs, Liverpool and Southampton are insurmountable for West Ham?

Football fans are so quick to criticise any team looking to push beyond their 'natural position'.

Well they are in Europe via the fair play.

That might be the greatest test - managing both competitions.

Having been real shit for a few years up until last season, a couple of years of mid-table mediocrity would have done them a whole lot of good. Wanting Europe comes at a cost. And that cost moves clubs closer to relegation more often than not.

They've finished midtable for the last three seasons.

How much midtable mediocrity do you have to go through before you're allowed to start looking to improve?

All I hope is that they have a decent replacement already pretty much signed. With the new stadium coming, if they have a new manager who is going to projectile the team forward, the next few years could be huge for West Ham. If they don't and they end up with someone worse... next season could be an absolute disaster.

Sam has been resigned to it for a while now, and I don't suppose he'll bother with the way the news was told to him. He'll have no problem getting another job someplace.

They were bottom 3 from Boxing Day till February and Sam's position was severely questioned by the fanbase during that time (losing to Forest in the Cup putting out a C team didn't go down well). They were never in real danger of going down with a man like Sam in charge. It's some kind of security really and I don't really see who they could appoint who'll make them a long-term fixture in the top half of the league.
If they don't have anyone lined up then they've shot themselves in the foot. Maybe McClaren?

Correct, Sam came to the club and did exactly what was asked of him, promotion to the prem in his first season and mid table for 3 years, but jeez, 3 seasons of boring to watch long ball hoof style shyte, we've never pretended that we're a top 4 club but we used to play attractive football, now with Allardyce finally gone we might get back to playing good entertaining football - albeit with a possibility of relegation - which can happen with any club.

I still don't see why any of this means West Ham aren't allowed to want more than shithouse football for midtable?

So because Allardyce had them in the bottom three for a month, they shouldn't sack him?

It's fine to have aspirations. Christ, they can aspire to the CL if they want. But I think making public that Allardyce was being let go straight after the season gives the impression the owners were desperate to get rid because he did a shit job. Which he didn't. He did fine. Not brilliant, but okay.

The football wasn't boring first half of the season though was it? They were playing some really entertaining stuff from what I can recall. I'm not going to cry crocodile tears for the man, he was well rewarded for what he did, and he done a decent job for West Ham as you say. I sometimes suspect it is Allardyce's appearance, accent, and lack of rapport with the fans that leads to his lack of popularity, rather than what happens on the park. It's an image thing - he's not seen as a "sophisticated" coach although he has beaten sophisticated coaches with lesser resources than they have during his career.
I can understand why The Hammers would want another man to progress them up the table towards Europe, but they better have a clear idea of who they want and how much they are prepared to invest or they'll end up fighting relegation and (again, no crocodile tears, I'm a Spurs fan) going down again would be a f*cking disaster for the club.

Didn't think you were boring in the first half of the season.

You're making it sound like it's a piece of piss. Allardyce was villified by the press and most of the fanbase. Quite a few wouldn't have stuck to their guns and couldn't have fallen back on a good track record of avoiding relegation (which he achieved comfortably in the end). It wasn't a very popular time for the man.
West Ham are allowed to do what they want but I reckon the football displayed in the first half of the season had potential. I find extremely harsh that a club that was being compared to Southampton as possible top 4 troublemakers back in late 2014 don't keep the manager under which they were playing so good football. I know things go very fast in this business but hell talk of having a short memory.
This season also proved that Sam is not tactically inept and can play different formations contrary to popular opinion. I think it was last season where he was playing 460 which wasn't working at all (and the main reason for them being in the relegation spot) but he wasn't too stubborn and switched back to 451. This season, I actually enjoyed his tinkering this season playing a 4312 when they have the ball (Downing's reconversion as an AM a great success) and a 451 while defending.

Who's going to take over then? Any news or names that West Ham fans would want?

Bilic would be an interesting appointment but there aren't many managers (who would realistically go to a nothing club like West Ham) better than big Sam.

Bilic would be the fans choice I guess. West Ham have been in relegation form since January and that's as good a reason to sack him as any

I think West Ham suffer from fans with unrealistic expectations...same as us and Newcastle. All fans will get on a manager's back after a while, there are some clubs where the tolerance seems lower.
