Do you donate? I do.

I just got an email from the blood donation service thanking me for my 50th donation. This isn't about me though, it's about how much donated blood is needed. My life was saved by a blood transfusion when I was 5 years old and my mother encouraged me to donate when I was old enough.

It doesn't matter if you have a common blood group, sometimes those are the blood groups that are in short supply because people think that others will give.

Yesterday I found out that my donation was likely to go to a newborn baby because of the blood type it was. That made me feel good.

Please think about donating if you can, you could save a life.

I'd do it if it was still on a walk in basis, but now I believe you have to make an appointment, and quite frankly, I'm not going to do that. Also, I'd probably do it if we did the same as America where you get paid to do it. However, according to the EU it's illegal to sell parts of the body. Likewise I'd donate sperm for the same reason.

Such is the nobility of that civic action the philosophy of the welfare state was likened to it when it was set up. I hate having blood taken from me. I'm ok with having shit injected into me though.

You'd want to be paid to do it?

I'd donate sperm if I was paid to for sure.

I wouldn't want to be paid for my blood but unfortunately they won't take it for me.

You can walk in, but you may have to wait quite a while. With an appointment you're out within 45 minutes.

As for payment, it's never been done that way in this country and I doubt that it ever will. However, many companies give their staff time off to go and donate.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
But I suspect you'd not want to pay for it if you needed it?

I've donated for years.

Apart from the vast swathes of healthcare that rely on charity, obviously...

What's the policy with tattoos now ? Because at one one time you couldn't donate if you had one done within a set amount of months

Still the case. I think it's a six month wait.

Thanks , I have donated and would do again ( even though I hated it ) but the tattoo limit would stop me for the present .

I'm a regular donor and am always trying to encourage my colleagues to donate. We work 2 minutes away from a permanent donor centre so there's no excuse really. If you can you should really. It's fairly painless, you're in and out within an hour and you can save a life or two, why wouldn't you?

I used to be a regular blood donor but when I turned 65 they said thanks, but no thanks, maybe it was because of the BP pills I take, plus 0 positive is a common blood type.

Always admire those who donate blood regularly. And organ donors. I can't because I have lived for extended periods in Africa.

As for those willing to donate only for payment: just remember that if you or a loved one with a rarer blood type suddenly need blood after a serious accident. Perhaps when you are lying in the road waiting for an ambulance or helicopter that you've personally paid for out of your taxes, it will take your mind off your immediate circumstances.

I thought you weren't allowed to donate if you'd ever had a blood transfusion? Anyway, congratulations on making 50 donations, that's a sterling effort.

I've recently got back into the habit of going regularly, think I'm on 13 donations now. Have to go to Carrow Road to do it though :lac:

It was probably the blood pressure, my mother had to give up for the same reason. The 65 age limit only applies to first time donors.

You can't donate if you've had a transfusion since 1980 (I think). Mine was in 1968.

I regularly donate.

I wouldn't want to be paid, nor if I was being paid would it be the sole motivation. It's a selfless act and takes about 30 minutes out of your day. I normally pop in after work and it's all very friendly.

Same as Techno, I'd love to donate and used to as soon as I was old enough for a 2/3 years but can't any more for various reasons. Think I've had 2/3 biscuits for every donation though so my biscuit:donation ratio is stronger than Meadow.

Absolutely no reason to not give blood if you can...and dont really understand the logic behind having to be paid for it, saving a life not enough? Remember reading that one country has introduced a text message service where you get a message to say your blood has just been used to save a life when they use it, would be very effective IMO.

I've always wanted to do it but have never got round to it yet. Always up at the hospital too for one thing or another. Really should try and free up some time specifically for it.

Once I had a risk rate for anemia so they can't accept my blood or else I'd really enjoy to donate it.

Donated for the first time yesterday. Really quick and easy to do. Felt a little dizzy and sick afterwards so I had to be sat on a chair again, a bit embarrassing as all these middle to old aged people were just chilling. Bit shit that you have to wait 3/4 months, but I'll be doing it again in October when I'm next available to.

Is there any way of knowing where your blood ends up? Would not like to save Posh Hammer's life, for eg.

Blood transfusion at 13 years old means I can't do this. Shame as I love biscuits.
