You're the very epitome of a cyclical club - your success, or otherwise, depends on the quality of the young players coming through your system.

It's always going to be feast or famine - the same as most others clubs, tbh

The Good: Smacking Palace 4-1 at home in the Championship on Boxing Day 2000 with Neil Ruddock missing a penalty for them after coming on as sub. Great result, great atmosphere that day.

The Bad: 92/93 and a nice local derby with Bury at home, lost 4-1 in a season where we narrowly avoided relegation out of the league. My dad got in trouble from my mum for taking me and leaving her at home with the left-over turkey. Wish we hadn't bothered.

The Ugly: Boxing Day 2007, 1-1 v Southend. A truly fucking dreadful game, we failed to register a shot on target, our 89th minute equaliser was an own-goal. The side that day contained some real shite, Craig Armstrong, Delroy Facey, Dennis Oli, Stuart Thurgood. Awful, awful, awful.

I remember being at Bury on Boxing Day in 2004 when the Shrewsbury team bus got stuck in an accident on the M6 and couldn't get there. Our fans managed to get there ok, but the team bus had to go via Stoke to pick some players up on the way and got caught up in the traffic!

Luckily missed the rearranged match which finished 0-0 in early February.

Was talking about that rearranged game the other week, one of the worst games I have ever witnessed. Everything about the club seemed soulless. Also don't think I have ever been more disappointed by a cancelled game than that boxing day cancellation.

Last year was a good one, getting dicked 6-1 at Norwich.

On the upside, beating Palace twice in three years is pretty solid about ten years ago.

My memory often fails me these days, but I'm sure there were far bigger and memorable games back in the days before the fixture computer thought that games against the likes of Fleetwood Town (no offence) were a good idea on Boxing Day. :ffs:

A Boxing Day game that does stay fresh in the mind is another against Bury in 2002 when a Ryan Lowe hat-trick saw Town win 4-1.

It doesn't stick in the mind for the result but for the fact that it was the first game after Arthur Rowley had passed away. Standing on the Riverside amongst other fellow supporters struggling to hold back the tears during an impeccably observed minutes silence was something I'll never forget. That was one of the few wins for Town during the remainder of that season which eventually saw us relegated to the Conference. It was a small mercy that the great man didn't live to see that outcome.

My main memory from the game itself was Pete Wilding wheeling away after scoring early on. Shame that the following year was Northwich in the conference, though that was the first time I had stood on the Station End. Lucky as it was pouring with rain and I usually stood on the open Wakeman End.

Was at that game, first none local away game for me, brother booked me on the fan's coach as a Christmas present. We were doing well in the league and had a decent away record, Shrews were struggling so was confident of a win. Very one sided victory and an all round joke of a performance. Even our 87th minute consolation meant little as Shrews went up field and scored again.:bang:

In typical Bury fashion we handed Shrews one of their final 2 league victories of the season I believe. Their victory over Everton came shortly after beating us so that glossed over the boxing day farce slightly.

Worst bit was on the coach home with a splitting headache developing they had the 5live phone in and a Liverpool fan rung up complaining because his team had just had the audacity to draw 1-1 with Blackburn at Anfield. Idiot .

Smashing Luton 4-1 in the Championship in 2006 has got to be up there - we played some brilliant stuff that day, scored some excellent team goals and it pushed us to the brink of the play-offs. We moved into the play-offs by battering Wolves a few days later.

What a time to be alive.

I can't remember any classic games on that day for us. I recall in 1995 v Peterborough at Saltergate some nutcase getting stark bollock naked on a closed and completely frozen away terrace. I think it finished 0-0 which will be half right against the same opposition this time.

Yeah, I know. Rumour has it though, there was a point when we weren't shit. That time has faded into myth and legend now.
Trust me-we did used to be pretty good and were usually found close to the top of the league.
It really did happen.
