Breakfast, lunch, tea (or dinner if it's later on).

Breakfast, lunch, dinner. I might say tea for evening meal, but would never say dinner for middle of the day meal.

I must confess to not realising this was a North/South thing.

Apologies to my southern comrades but I think I'm going to have to assume a position on the fence for this one because when I was growing up it was always breakfast/dinner/tea. I would, however, ask you to direct your ire at mother pineapple who instilled these terms in me (like her son she grew up in Greater London to southern parents so I've no idea why she would be using INAPPROPRIATE NORTHERN TERMINOLOGY). I'm pretty sure all my peers pretty much used breakfast/lunch/dinner so I had to consciously try to adapt my language with the result being that I now kinda use lunch/dinner and dinner/tea quite interchangeably.

Lunch is summat in between bread. Dinner when it's things that absolutely need a plate. Hence school dinners tended to involve mash, gravy and peas, whereas a lunchbox contains a wrap or a buttie.

Tea can refer to a slightly lighter meal, while dinner is interchangeable as the main meal of the day, whatever the time of day. But tea overrules for the final meal.

This for me, and it's definitely a northern thing as no one I know other than family and friends from up north call them that. Even my wife who is also from Liverpool calls it breakfast, lunch and dinner, presumably thanks to living daan saath since she was about 11.

Lunch ladies? How ridiculous does that sound?

Although I do concede that the earlier post with the lunchbox makes a decent point. (I'd have gone for power rangers effort myself - the image chosen looks more like a shit blue briefcase)

I do think this is more of a class divide than a geographical one, although given the ridiculous wealth gap between north and south it's easy to come to that conclusion.

I first came across this debate in my first week at uni. I was astonished and angry at being in the minority and called a weird northern peasant for my insistence on BDT. I was previously aware that some posh pricks had the audacity to mess around with convention but this new discovery meant that I felt like an alien in my own land.

I genuinely called my mum in a distressed state to confirm whether I was being silly or if she had brought me up the wrong way. She'd never heard such a ridiculous thing as having dinner after 5pm, so that was no help.

By re-engaging in the debate with my newest acquaintances, I thought I was destined to make a fool of myself and be an outsider forever. Fortunately, someone else felt far more strongly about it than I. A lad called Jac (no k, honestly!) who was the son of some sort of baron or head at the top private school in Wales, finished off the argument with quite an embarrassing and hilarious rant:

"OH FOR FUCKS SAKE YOU NORTHERN MONKEY, IT'S LUNCH AND DINNER. TEA IS AN AFTERNOON PLEASANTRY, USUALLY ACCOMPANIED BY A HOT DRINK AND A SCOOOOOWNE"

Hard to argue with that

As others have said, tea is a drink.

It's breakfast, lunch, dinner.

I dislike tea as a drink but it's always been breakfast dinner and tea.

I say a mixture of both.

Sometime I will say lunch for the middle meal, sometimes I will say dinner.

Sometimes I will say dinner for the evening meal, sometimes I will say tea.
